Antibiotic-Tromethamine-EDTA Lavage for the treatment of Bacterial Rhinitis in a Dog

A 15 year old, 3.7 kg, spayed Toy Poodle was examined because of sneezing and mucopurulent nasal discharge that had persisted for 2 weeks. The dog had had periodontal disease for 3 years. Cytologic examination of the nasal discharge revealed purulent exudate with bacteria. Skull radiography revealed periodontal disease, with bony lysis around tooth roots and an area of increased soft issue density in the caudal part of the right nasal cavity, with some increased lucency and loss of trabecular pattern anterior to this region. The nasal exudate was cultured for bacteria and fungi, and anti-bacterial sensitivity testing was performed on the isolates. Staphylococcus aureus and an alpha-hemolytic streptococcus were isolated.
