WCVD Report-TrizPlus Most Effective
The following article is a published abstract for the WCVD showing that TrizPLUS
(with .15% chlorhexidene), currently the preferred version of TrizEDTA by many
experts, is safe to use in the middle ear of dogs.
Brainstem auditory evoked responses in 37 dogs with otitis media before and
after topical therapy
S. PATERSON and L. PAYNE
Rutland House Veterinary Hospital, St. Helens, Merseyside, UK
Brainstem evoked auditory responses (BAERS) were assessed from 60 ears of 37
dogs for evidence of ototoxicity after the application of topical medications.
A chlorhexidene/EDTA tris flush (TrizPlus, DermaPet) was used to flush throughout
treatment and topical antibiotic therapy included marbofloxacin (29), gentamicin
(9), clotrimazole (27), tobramycin (2), ticarcillin (3) and silver sulphadiazine
(8). BAERs were measured before and after topical application. A score was given
for each drug as the difference between the two BAER readings. A positive score
indicated an improvement in hearing, a negative score a deterioration. Pseudomonas
spp. (27), coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (11) and Malassezia pachydermatis
(29) were most commonly isolated. Each ear was thoroughly flushed and soaked
in chlorhexidene/EDTA triz for 10 min before 0.5 ml of antibiotic solution was
instilled. Intravenous dexamethasone (0.1 mg kg-1 ) was given after flushing
in all cases. Owners used the flush daily at home before instilling 0.5 ml of
antibiotic solution. At a 3 week reassessment oral prednisolone (1 mg kg -1
body weight once daily) was prescribed. Dogs were anaesthetized at their 6-8
week check where repeat cytology and BAER testing was performed. Mean BAER scores
for each drug were recorded. Results for marbofloxacin and gentamicin in aqueous
solution were +15 and +12.5 respectively. Clotrimazole solution scored +17 and
silver sulphadiazine solution +6.8. Tobramycin and ticarcillin produced profound
reduction in BAER scores at -50 and -16.7 respectively suggesting they are ototoxic
when applied to the middle ear.
November was travel the world month. Jack did the Muller Derm conference in KONA, HI, I did the Caribbean Veterinary Association in St Marten and Jack, YT and JON PLANT went to HONG KONG for the WCVD. The chance to compare US airlines to foreign did not make the US look good, in terms of service intraASIA or intercontinental.
St Marten
LOU and PENNY GOTTHELF joined YT to do an otology seminar and work shop. BILL TOPLIFF was there for MedRx. It turned out to be as much fun and sun as hoped. When we checked in they told us there were politicos from New York including the governor, Mayor BLOOMBERG and CHARLES RANGEL. Also, we had unlimited food and booze. Sun, fun, political celebrities and booze made for a great mix. YT played Texas Hold'em with the Honorary Charles Rangel who I suggested, liberal democrat that he is, he should "share the wealth"; unfortunately, he did share MY wealth.
GARY SWANSON ran a good meeting. MIKE GARCIA from AVS was the only distributor there. GUS REEDER, our host last year from the Commonwealth Vet meeting in Barbados, and GRAHAM BROWN of Jamaica where the 2009 meeting will "soon come", were present. JANE ROSE (UK) told me of her work with some familiar UK derms.
WCVD, HONG KONG
On the way to Hong Kong we stopped in Thailand to check on business. Dr PANTEP dined with us telling us about the upcoming annual Thai Veterinary Conferences called the 2nd FASAVA www.fasava2009.com. We visited with him again in Hong Kong where he was promoting the meeting. Also Korea was promoting the 2011 WSAVA. While the service in Thailand was notable, the scenery and masses of people in Hong Kong were memorable. The Star ferry to Kowloon dock was just out the front door of the host hotel. On the evening sailings, the bright, colored lights magnificently lit the buildings up in a dramatic contrast with the sea. And, according to BARBARA WHITE, the shopping was outstanding. Everything was fast, the people, cabs and even the escalators. And the masses of people all seemed intent on getting somewhere, going in every direction. As far as labor went, it appeared that each task had 4 people to handle what in the US would require one; i.e., there were 4 people pushing the coffee and lunch carts.
The FOOD was interesting. While many meals contained mystery components with unidentifiable vegetables or meats, and others were mouth tingling spicy, most were quite palatable, especially for those who like Asian cuisine. Still, our group notably enjoyed a MickyD fries break during a Kowloon shopping/sightseeing trek.
ILAN SKORINSKY(Israel) was one of the first to greet me. GARY MAXWELL (Cocoa Beach, FL), HIAYAN TAN and DEGUI LIN (Beijing), DONDIN SAJUTHI, (noted primate researcher from Jakarta, Indonesia) and Dr SIVAGURUNATHAN (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) visited our booth. JIM ADAMS (AU) helped Jack and I out while JON PLANT mainly went to meetings. SUE PATERSON (UK) was busy presenting talks on equine, lime sulfur and otology. AKIHASA KATO (Japan) took a photo with me at our booth . BABETTE TAUGPOL (Norway) was busy listening to presentations. Many thanks go ALEX LI (Hong Kong, MiraclePharm) for helping us set up.
