New Products
DentAcetic(tm) Natural Toothgel with Sodium hexametaphosphate. You may ask, "Why vinegar in a dental product? " Please keep in mind that because of the dilute, beneficial acid effects on the teeth and gums, this product is not necessary to use daily nor does it require vigorous brushing.. DentAcetic is the FIRST BRIGHTENER on the pet market, it has a broad range of antimicrobial activity, is an excellent degreaser and non-toxic-especially as compared to chlorhexidine which also has been reported to cause teeth staining as well as miscellaneous tissue reactions. The Sodium hexametaphosphate is to prevent calculus formation. As a side note, this product has been under development and testing for over 2 years with veterinary dentists. BUY 3 CASES (of DentAcetic) AND RECEIVE 4TH FREE.

YADA, YADA, YADA
The DermaPet booth at the The NAVC was never busier. We sold products to be hand-carried to China, Brazil, Israel, Peru and various European and other countries. We started tradeshow season with a breakfast with TOM ROGEN and JOHN NICHOLSON of BURNS, our only national distributor. Since the Super Bowl had not been played yet, Tom was flying high.
PAUL PION and the VIN staff of NIKKI, YAEL, JOHN and NATE invited everyone to attend their party on their 10th anniversary. The food, booze and music by a live band kept the crowd going.
TERESE DeMANUELLE lectured on the right way to treat Malassezia dermatitis. JIMMY NOXON and CRAIG GRIFFIN did the ear seminar.
One of the favorite new books was HOSKINS and WHITFORD'S new book on FIRST CHOICE PROTOCOLS with a CD-rom from AVLS at 800-444-3634 (ask for the DermaPet special). I REALLY like their Derm and Ear protocols.
The Penn meeting in Philadelphia had over 750 vets. I enjoyed seeing my classmates, in particular WILLIE McCORMICK (Middleburg) and BOB ZERBE (somewhere in PA). The NEBZYDOWSKI clan (JOE and ANDY) prepared a worthwhile order for themselves and their brother HENRY, my classmate who could not attend due to too many children wanting to go to and be in vet school. Dean ALAN KELLY was quite upbeat at the President's reception and promised to send a note to all teachers for the Class of '03 to encourage no exam during the Penn meetings next year. ED STEPHENSON, formerly of the University of Maryland and VMRVC, manned the Banfield booth. Ed was the first person who notified me of the good news that my daughter Jessica was accepted to vet school. Now at Penn, JESSICA MELMAN (PENN '03) staffed the DermaPet booth so GLORIA and I were able to leave a little early to drive back to DC and catch a before daylight plane to Houston for the SWVC.
It was a treat to meet with NLS supersales reps Sid Trump, Willie Mah and Keith Wacker who were very upbeat on the new DentAcetic gel.
Houston/SWVC
ALAN GARETT (Corpus Christi) joined us (driven there by MARCELANO RIOS, Southwest Vet Supply's #1 sales rep) for an otherwise quiet meeting. We visited with DALE LONSFORD at the President's reception. LOWELL ACKERMAN (Renaissance man) who just penned his 70th book, was our guest at a "Texas Steakhouse" along with MIKE SCRIVEN (VSSI).
Las Vegas/Western States/MGM Grand
This was the first meeting at the enormous MGM. On Sunday, DAVID ROSEN and ROD MIERS (Pharmacia) and KENNY KEITH (Medrx) drove me around a golf course where "our team" won the Vet Economic Golf tournament. When we came back to the hotel to thaw out-it was quite cold-DOUG CATT and I were greeted by JASON GIAMBI (American League MVP) walking through the lobby. Jason, a client of the notorious HENRY RANDAZZO (Palm Desert) referred to me, actually stopped and talked to me and gave Doug an autograph, much to the dismay of one of the trailing entourage.
Of course, ALAN GARETT of http://www.ihatealangarett.com was again with us (for those of you who could not dodge him in Vegas or Houston, he will again be in San Antonio for AAHA). Alan was again a diplomat for goodwill at our booth...in the same ill thought out logic as would Bill Clinton and Jesse Jackson be spokespeople for family values. Lest I forget, thank you Alan for your presence at the DermaPet booth.
The ESPY's made the place even more lively. Alan and I enjoyed meeting Mr. Cub, ERNIE BANKS. Gloria told DICK VITALE ("it's over, BABEEE") that she didn't much like basketball.
LOU and PENNY GOTTHELF (Montgomery, AL), MIKE MARK (my dad's classmate's son/Houston), MIKE BETHARD (Napa, CA), JOHN, NATE and YAEL of (VIN), KEITH POULIOT(Medrx), ALAN MIYAHARA (Honolulu), LARRY TILLEY (VetMedCenter.com), NEAL TAUBER (VCA), GARY ("Karl") LANDSBERG (Toronto) and DEB HOROWITZ (St Louis) all spent significant time with us. . WILLIAM HERNDON (an intern at Penn) showed up at the Penn meeting and Vegas -- either this guy's got major desire and energy to learn or interns have far more time on their hands now then when I was in school. KEITH POULIOT (Medrx) had a gambling experience at the blackjack tables of which legends are made.
JIMMY NOXON and ROD ROSYCHUCK had a very thorough Ear seminar. Used to the doghouse, DermaPet doesn't know how to feel now that we're getting so much favorable mention from speakers. I heard PETER IHRKE mentioned our MalAcetic products several times in his Malassezia talk. And the TrizEDTA and our acetic/boric acid Ear/Skin Cleanser seem to be on everybody's must use list. The DentAcetic tooth and gum gel is supposed to be featured in March's Dental magazine.
MedRx is offering CE doing their EAR Seminars on the road next in Cincinnati on March 4, Houston on March 18 and Chicago on March 25. Be there to hear LOU GOTTHELF teach you the latest, state of the art otology. Ears represent the #1 complaint of pet owners to vets (VPI insurance claims, 2000). Call Kenny Keith at 888-392-1234 to register or find out when one is coming near you.
Malassezia and Bacterial Otitis PROTOCOLS While it is true that the acetic/boric acid products have efficacy against Pseudomonas, they are actually FIRST LINE topical treatment while the TrizEDTA (Step 6) remains the best protocol for treatment after the acetic/boric acid is used using Step 3b or Step 4 (See the Seven Steps to Treating Ears under Protocols at http://www.dermapet.com). BOTH OF THESE PRODUCTS CAN BE USED IF THERE IS A RUPTURED TYMPANUM.
For more details on this look at previous (12/00 and 1/01 Newsletters). We will be focusing on Bacterial Otitis and Step 6 in this Newsletter. The entire text for the Seven Steps to Treat Ears is available at http://www.dermapet.com.
RECENT RESEARCH by Dr. Louis GOTTHELF and SULIMAN GBADAMOSI (Tusk, Micro Dept) indicate that there is no need to wait 15 minutes after instilling TrizEDTA to use antibiotics. In fact, when testing samples that were previously reported as resistant to flouroquinolones (using MICs), eight dilutions of our stock TrizEDTA were required to not inhibit growth. This indicates that the TrizEDTA is bactericidal by itself.
Step 6.
1.Orbafloxin (Dicural/Ft Dodge) Marbofloxin (Xenoquin/Pfizer) or Baytril (Bayer) systemically for at least 21-60 days.
2.Clean with TrizEDTA twice daily.
3.Approximately 15 minutes after each cleaning, instill Baytril in either a TrizEDTA GEMISH (12 ml of TrizEDTA and 50-200 mg of Baytril injectable) or diluted with saline. Some people use aminoglycosides even though they are ototoxic.
4. For the first 14 days, I would use systemic prednisone at 1 mg/kg IF OM is diagnosed. The rationale is to decrease the inflammation, mucous secretion from the mucoperiosteum, pain and viscosity of the exudate in the tympanic cavity.
5.If OM is diagnosed, I would anesthetize and, with visualization, flush the ear with TrizEDTA and directly instill Baytril and NaDex phosphate into the tympanic bulla. If th tympanum is present and OM is suspected then I would do a myringotomy. The location of the myringotomy should be ventral. Maintenance therapy would include biweekly TrizEDTA cleansing longterm. Some people recommend our acetic/boric acid Ear/Skin Cleanser instead since it has activity against Pseudomonas as well as Malassezia.
Remember: Do NOT be misled by various forms of misinformation as to why certain companies do not use boric acid with acetic acid. The reality is that DermaPet holds a patent on this combination.
