DermaPet Celebrates It's 10th Anniversary

To protect veterinarians, we have made our website password protected for pricing information.  Please use the following:
user name is dermapet
password is cust1.

Ten years may seem like a long time but to me it's flashed right by. One day we had just two products- our Hypoallergenic Shampoo and our Conditioner and no distributors. Now we have 14 products, numerous patents (some pending) with a very long and full pipeline. And, as you can see listed below, our distribution is rapidly expanding. In the early years Pfizer (then Smith-Kline-Beecham) sold 2 of our products in their Mycodex label. We did other private labels (including Vedco) over the years, but now manufacture and distribute our line worldwide exclusively for ourselves. Now, we are celebrating our longevity with a once in our lifetime sale (as described below).

This Newsletter will include a new category- the Internet Post of the Month by Nick Dodman. Last month's MIC'S FOR DUMMIES was one of our most well liked. Please go to the Newsletter archive at the web site to view it and our other newsletters. Also, please look at http://www.dermapet.com to see our many updates, Protocols including Malassezia Dermatitis, the popular TrizEDTA Bacterial Otitis Protocol, the Pruritic Clinical Trial, and articles. THE NEW BROCHURE IS ON LINE.

Please go to http://www.dermapet.com or call 800-755-4738 for DIRECT sales. We also sell via select distributors such as Burns , Columbus Serum, NLS, MWI, Penn Vet, PVP, Merritt, Premier, R & S Pharma, R. Weinstein (Hawaii), TW Vet Supply, Vet Med Supply and Vetpo. In the last month we have added Henry Schein and Midwest Vet Supply. We can now provide you a dominant distributor anywhere you may be in the USA (including Alaska and Hawaii). We are also available in Canada via CENTRAL SALES (central@ica.net), Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Central America and soon in Europe.

EUROPEAN VETS (and others worldwide): We are shipping TrizEDTA for $11.99 (per 4 ounce/cases of 12) INCLUDING SHIPPING BY FEDEX.

We will be atthe World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) meeting in VANCOUVER on August 7-12. Then it's off to KANSAS CITY for the Central Veterinary Conference (CVC) on August 25-27.

MedRx is offering CE doing their EAR Seminars on the road next in KANSAS CITY on September 8 and CHARLOTTE on September 15. For our AUSTRALIA colleagues, Lou Gotthelf will be in SYDNEY on August 14 and MELBOURNE on August 16.  Be there to hear Lou teach you the latest, state of the art otology.  Ears represent the #1 complaint of pet owners to vets (VPI insurance claims, 2000). Call Kenny Keith at 888-392-1234 to register or find out when one is coming near you.

GEMISH info. Many people have said they cannot get Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (DSP) and want to know what to substitute. As long as the corticosteroid is of a similar strength and water soluble, it should be OK. However, one should not need to shake it, as is often the case with many injectable corticosteroids. Although I have a supply of DSP, one substitute others are using is Azium (Schering). The antibiotic selection may vary, as well.

AVMA in Boston

Richard Wooley, who has largely been credited for conceiving of tris-edta, strolled by our booth. He credited Craig Greene for calling tris-edta "Wooley's solution." Dr. Wooley told us stories about students bringing in cases of long standing ear problems-one for as long as 3 years- where after a thorough evaluation, it was determined they had Pseudomonas infections. He described remarkable response rates using our TrizEDTA and a similar protocol to our Step 6 (See 7 Steps to Treating Ears). Penelope Gibbs, who works with Wooley burns, described a severe burn case with Pseudomonas that responded quite well to a topical preparation including TrizEDTA and antibiotics. We have been citing many articles by Wooley et al where the TrizEDTA has been used to treat other organs besides ears. Examples would be skin (burns), cystitis (use as a flush for blocked cats), respiratory infections (tracheitis, sinusitis, pneumonia), abscesses (use as a flush) and to decalcify infections such
as calcifying keratitis and calcinosis cutis. The key message from Wooley is to not give up; stay with the TrizEDTA for 45-90 days.

Other notables present were Lowell Ackerman who proudly showed me his picture with Eddie, the dog in Frazier. I kept running into Ron Whitford and Ralph Lee, program manager and executive director of many conferences including Myrtle Beach, Williamsburg, Ashford, NC, an Alaskan cruise and other places.   Dan Scott and Daniel Fields (ESC/Sharplan) were seen at Abe and Louie's where my pants met a flying dish of very dark steak sauce courtesy of a busy waiter. Charlie Rahner (Summitt Hills) was seen attempting to do business with some Japanese customers. Carol Foil was an invited derm lecturer. Ken Kwochka and Lynette Cole did a wet lab for Storz prior to the show. Ken said he had recently played 10 holes at "4 over" making him eligible for my foursome ANYtime, ANYplace. Gary Landsberg and Deb Horwitz did their behavior lectures; Gary showed pictures of our cat toys, which, as they often do, sold out early. The typically slow AVMA show was so busy we needed to ask for brochures!
back from Lisa Bromfield, NLS rep from Maine. Terry Reilly of Veterinary Medical Publications bought Gary Bouge and I each a 3-pound lobster. In the big city-small world category, we managed to run into the Waltham "crew' 3 straight nights at dinner and twice at after dinner places. Jeff Webster of Webster Vet supply was seen sporting his new $93 million smile.

Jay Griffin (Class of 2004), our student rep at Texas A&M, was written up, picture and all, in the Williamson County (Texas) newspaper. He managed to get in a tidbit about DermaPet, too.

And from the Brakke Newsletter:

Tyson Foods, Inc. and Renewable Energy, an Australian based company with offices in North Carolina, announced that they are joining forces to provide an alternative use for approximately 80-85,000 tons of chicken litter a year in the Delmarva Region. (Ed note: Alternative use for chicken feces? What's the first alternative? Only Alan Garett could sell this stuff.)

Humans and cats will soon be able to share and wear the same
perfume. Oh My Cat, a scent designed for both cats and humans, is set to hit U.S. store shelves in mid-August.  Oh My Cat is floral, mixing jasmine, magnolia, freesia, mandarin and bergamot with cedar, sandalwood, vanilla and a touch of olive leaf oil that cats with their sensitive noses can smell but humans can't, according to Adipar, the company that is introducing Oh My Cat in the United States. Since it's for cats, Oh My Cat is completely edible, he said, although it contains no catnip. Aimed at affluent cat owners, Oh My Cat will be sold exclusively at first at Saks Fifth Avenue, for around $32 for a 50 ml bottle. Its canine counterpart, Oh My Dog, was launched last year, also at Saks. (Reuters) (Methinks my house and clothes already DO smell too much like my dogs and cats.)

And in derm related news, Hogs at the Dallas and Greene county (Iowa) fairs were diagnosed with erysipelas. More than 190 hogs from the Greene County Fair were sent to slaughter several days earlier than planned because they were exposed to 4 hogs found to have the disease. In Dallas County, erysipelas was detected in one hog after the live hog show was held. About 60 hogs exposed to the disease will be held for 3 weeks on the fairgrounds in Adel after being vaccinated for the disease.

A six-year old Swiss cat has been diagnosed with an illness related to BSE, probably from eating infected cat food. Swiss authorities said it is the first case in Switzerland, although 90 cases have been identified in Britain, with the first registered in 1990. The authorities added that in various countries several big cats in zoos, like puma, tiger and lion, have also been diagnosed with the illness called feline spongiform encephalopathy(FSE). They said the disease could not spread from cats to humans and noted that no cases had been detected in dogs. (Reuters)

Clomicalm and anesthesia

(Internet Post of the Month by Nick Dodman in response to a question regarding the use of clomiprimine treated patients undergoing anesthesia. Nick is boarded in both Behavior and Anesthesia.)

The precise answer to the questions depends to a large extent on the anesthetic agent(s) being used. I omit the Clomicalm does on the day of surgery; avoid centrally acting anti-cholinergics (use glcopyrolate), barbiturates should (always) be given slowly, carefully, and to effect; avoid alpha-2 agents, like xylazine; avoid butyrophenones, like droperodol (even in combinations like Innovar); use acepromazine only in modest doses. If still in doubt or if there is particular reason for concern, use inhalational induction and maintenance with say, isoflurane. Monitoring is always indicated: watch heart rate and rhythm with ECG; monitor BP; respiration. Take appropriate steps to normalize if parameters veer too far from normal. That said, with care there should be no problems.
