TrizEDTA and the TNAVC
To protect veterinarians, we have made our website password protected for pricing
information. Please use the following:
user name is dermapet
password is cust1.
Please go to the Newsletter archive at the web site to view previous newsletters
including MICs for DUMMIES. Also, please look at http://www.dermapet.com to
see our many updates, Protocols including Malassezia Dermatitis, the popular
TrizEDTA Bacterial Otitis Protocol, the Pruritic Clinical Trial, and articles.
THE NEW BROCHURE IS ON LINE.
Please go to http://www.dermapet.com
or call 800-755-4738 for DIRECT sales. We also sell via select distributors
such as Burns , Columbus Serum, NLS, MWI, Penn Vet, PVP, Merritt, Premier,
R & S Pharma, R. Weinstein (Hawaii), TW Vet Supply, Vet Med Supply and Vetpo.
In the last month we have added Henry Schein and Midwest Vet Supply. We can
now provide you a dominant distributor anywhere you may be in the USA (including
Alaska and Hawaii). We are also available in Canada via CENTRAL SALES (central@ica.net),
Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Central America and soon in Europe.
The SHELF LIFE of the TrizEDTA has been questioned since we originally had
a 21 day expiration date on the label. We are RECOMMENDING SIX MONTHS after
reconstitution despite data from Wooley indicating stability of at least 3 years.
It also does not need to be refrigerated after reconstituting. The point is
that the TrizEDTA is very stable, especially in the crystalline state.
EUROPEAN VETS (and others worldwide): We are shipping TrizEDTA for $11.99 (per
4 ounce/cases of 12) INCLUDING SHIPPING BY FEDEX.
We will be at the NAVC (Booth 714) in Orlando on January 12-16 where, amongst
many seminars, we hope to hear Lou Gotthelf talk on ears. A portion of his talk
is presented in this newsletter as our highlight of the month. Then on 1/30,
we will attend the PENN meeting in Philadelphia. We go to Ft Worth to the TVMA
(Booth 817) on 2/6. Then on 2/12 to Valentines Day in lovely Las Vegas for the
Western States where THIS year we will be at Booth 412.
SALES REPS HIRED
DermaPet is proud to announce the hiring of MEREDITH MILLER in the Southeast
and SUSAN ACKERSON on the West Coast. In future issues, we will tell you a little
about them. JACK WHITE is still serving Texas and GARY BOUGE has now completed
his move to Tucson. PLEASE warmly welcome them in your practices as you would
me. Remember, they (we) are here to serve your needs.
MedRx is offering CE doing their EAR Seminars on the road next RICHMOND on MARCH 3 and LOS ANGELES on March 17. Be there to hear LOU GOTTHELF teach you the latest, state of the art otology. Ears represent the #1 complaint of pet owners to vets (VPI insurance claims, 2000). Call 888-392-1234 to register or find out when one is coming near you.
GEMISH Information
Many people have said they cannot get Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (DSP)
and want to know what to substitute. As long as the corticosteroid is of a similar
strength and water soluble, it should be OK. However, one should not need to
shake it, as is often the case with many injectable corticosteroids. Although
I have a supply of DSP, one substitute others are using is Azium (Schering).
The antibiotic selection may vary, as well, and may be omitted entirely when
treating uncomplicated Malassezia otitis externa cases.
TrizEDTA Fast Facts

It is well established that tris-EDTA chelates membrane bound calcium and magnesium in Gram negative rods, including Pseudomonas. The weakened membrane increases the permeability of the membrane and allows antibiotics to easily diffuse into the bacteria.
New research indicates that EDTA may also bind and inactivate an enzyme called elastase, which is on the surface of Pseudomonas. As an important virulence factor, elastase dissolves the tight junctions between epithelial cells allowing them to slough, causing the ulceration often seen in Pseudomonas otitis externa. That exposes blood vessels to elastase and they become more permeable. The blood vessels leak serum and neutrophils freely move into the ear canal. Using TRIZEDTA in Pseudomonas otitis may prevent the devastating tissue effects of elastase.

Taiwan
Dr. JOHNSON CHIANG, a veterinarian and our distributor there, was an excellent host. Dr. JACK LEE of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the National Veterinary University in Taiwan, translated one of my 3 lectures. DermaPet is looking closely at Chinese Herbal Remedies to see if they can be applied to veterinary medicine in the US. Coincidentally, when asked what treatment was being used at the university for Malassezia, DR HP HUANG, staff member in charge of teaching dermatology, told me they were using Boric Acid and showed interest in our acetic/boric acid formulations.
We were also visited by our new Hong Kong and China distributor, Dr. ALEX LI. Dr. Li was formerly the Virbac rep for that area.
We agreed to all meet again no later than in Bangkok in 2003 where the WSAVA meetings will be held. For those of you who have not been there, let me assure you that Bangkok is one of the most enjoyable towns in the world, compared favorably to Amsterdam, except with warm weather, lower hotel costs and better food. Dr. KAROON CHAIWONGROJ of Central Pet Products is our distributor there and promises to be an excellent host there as he has been in the past.
Speaking of food, the Tonton Oolong tea was most delicious; this is a tasty variation of green tea, which is noted to be good for the drinker's health. Other food which I tasted included jelly fish (which I am glad to say was chewy), bamboo (like in hearts of palm), a fetid soybean dish which had a smell which deemed it's name appropriate and some unknown dishes, most of which tasted outstanding.
On an off day, JOHNSON CHIANG and I played golf where I learned the word "Concho" means Fore, as in what you are supposed to say to warn other players when you hit a golf ball that is going to land near them. Our foursome taught me that word repetitively.
We spent one evening dining with CHARLES CHEN, who tells me he works 7 days a week, most days leaving his home early and not returning until after 9 PM. Still, he finds the time to organize a dermatology society there, do his research, write a book (which he graciously gave me as a gift) and come to our derm meetings, including the GEORGE MULLER meeting in Hawaii.
Williamsburg, VA
Another RALPH and MARTHA LEE production with a program designed adroitly by RON WHITFORD. There was a surprising turnout of vets who, like with other Lee shows, brought their families. this show corresponded with the first lighting of the Xmas trees and ornaments in colonial Williamsburg. It also turned out to be a good place for sales and shopping at the outlets where the DermaPet booth did some damage. National speakers like DAWN BOOTHE (a TrizEDTA proponent from Texas A&M) brought attendees the latest info in various disciplines.
Vetderm Listserv Awards
Congratulations to MICHELLE ROSENBAUM (Rochester, NY) and JAN DeCLERCQ (Belgium) for co-winning best contributor awards on the Vetderm listserv. Not sure how the weather is in Belgium, but at least of late, credit can be given to the weather in Rochester for assisting Michelle to stay home at her computer. Their contributions have been most appreciated by Vetderm listserv members. For more info on how to join the listserv contact Thierry_Olivry@ncsu.edu.
DEBBIE MARK (MIKE MARK'S better half) from Houston, TX, on 11/29/01 proudly
gave birth to twins Houston and Meredith. Mike, a 2nd generation vet, whose
late Dad (Irwin) was my late Dad's classmate at A&M in 1941, claims his
golf swing is only in a resting state until the twins can be weaned.
