The SHELF LIFE of the TrizEDTA has been questioned. We are RECOMMENDING SIX MONTHS after reconstitution despite data from Wooley indicating stability of at least 3 years. It also does not need to be refrigerated after reconstituting. The point is that the TrizEDTA is very stable, especially in the crystalline state. After application, the quicker it gets to body temperature the better. Once reaching body temp, it irreversibly neutralizes the enzyme, which causes tissue degradation. We originally had a 21-day expiration date post reconstitution on the label.

EUWe will have a booth at the AAHA show in Boston on March 24-27 as well as visit the MedRx seminars in Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

SALES REPS HIRED

DermaPet is proud to announce the hiring of MEREDITH MILLER in the Southeast and SUSAN ACKERSON on the West Coast. IJACK WHITE is still serving Texas and GARY BOUGE has now completed his move to Tucson. PLEASE warmly welcome them in your practices as you would me. Remember, they (we) are here to serve your needs. We hope to have a NorthEast rep hired by April 1.

MedRx is offering CE doing their EAR Seminars on the road next in LOS ANGELES on March 17, PHILADELPHIA on April 7, ATLANTA on April 21 and TOLEDO on April 28. Be there to hear LOU GOTTHELF teach you the latest, state of the art otology. Ears represent the #1 complaint of pet owners to vets (VPI insurance claims, 2000). Call 888-392-1234 to register or find out when one is coming near you.

GEMISH Information

Many people have said they cannot get Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (DSP) and want to know what to substitute. As long as the corticosteroid is of a similar strength and water soluble, it should be OK. However, one should not need to shake it, as is often the case with many injectable corticosteroids. Although I have a supply of DSP, one substitute others are using is Azium (Schering). The antibiotic selection may vary, as well, and may be omitted entirely when treating uncomplicated Malassezia otitis externa cases.

YADA, YADA, YADA

Victor Added

We are pleased to announce the addition of Victor to our limited list of distributors. Victor has long been known to be the dominant distributor in California where it is said that 20% of dermatologics are sold. SUSAN ACKERSON will lead that territory for DermaPet.

TVMA, Ft. Worth

Jack ran the booth alone. There was a large group of Aggie vet students led by our student rep, JAY GRIFFIN, who visited the exhibit hall. MIKE MARK took a day off of golf and raising his twins to catch up on some CE.

Las Vegas, Western States, Feb 12-14

JACK WHITE and GARY BOUGE both showed up lame. Proving my strategy of the two of them working well together and, in a sort of reverse synergism, it was a different leg on each, thus making 1+1=1. Our new director's chairs exceeded our planned need. Ex-rodeo cowboy Jack seemed just slightly more mobile than Gary who required a 15-minute head start to most meetings. SUSAN ACKERSON was the trooper in the booth, providing all of the good looks and most of the energy.

In its last year as the host hotel for the meeting, the MGM was packed with veterinarians, techs, staff and exhibitors who participated in the show with the reckless abandon of the Wild West. The first 2 days of the show were far more crowded than the last day, being Valentine's Day, when it appeared many rushed home for a little romance.

From Down Under, JIM ADAMS and his colleague BRIAN OAKLEY of PROVET VICTORIA (Australia), were good sports. They will be distributing DermaPet (as well as MedRx videoscopes) in Australia. Yours truly hopes to visit there sometime this year, perhaps for the Australia VMA meeting in May, and for some golf, pool, leisure and, maybe even a seminar.

RON WHITFORD was on the program and seen often with RALPH LEE, the Southeast's conference king. Ron left Vegas early to do a seminar in Hawaii. KEN KWOCHKA and PETER IHRKE, who seem to be on everyone's program this year, also stopped by. ELAINE WEXLER (Cat Care Clinic, Orange, CA) visited as did JOE BOJRAB.

Good buddy, ALAN GARETT (Corpus Christi) helped out the DermaPet regulars again at the booth. Once again Alan has expressed desire to sell out and move to the NorthEast. Alan, buying equipment for a practice you want to leave is like buying jewelry for a girlfriend you say you want to break up with!

KEITH POULIOT returned to work for MedRx as their west coast rep. KENNY KEITH switched hats reducing the collective golf handicap for DAN SCOTT Associates way down. STEVE DALE, award winning Dog Writers Association scribe and syndicated columnist from the Chicago Tribune, was seen interviewing DON HARRIS. As he did in Orlando at TNAVC, Don again performed the touching slide show rendition of Bob Marley's Redemption.

STACEY MELMAN adorned the anniversary/Valentine's Day cover of DC One magazine. Stacey dropped by the MGM after the show to have a Valentine's Day drink and dinner with her dear, old dad.

Columbus, OVMA

COLLIN FERGUSON and DR. STEVE JOSEPH of IVD, dined with Gary and I. Steve, who told me that our cat toy turned his cute wife Linda's life around, accidentally stole the customer notification vibrator from Martini's. Of course, KEN KWOCHKA was on this program at THE OSU. His lovely wife, Terese, came by to tell us how much her cats also loved our cat toys. Methinks the cat toys are doing a great job.

Dr. VAN VRANKEN (Dickman Road Vet Clinic,Battlecreek MI) of the Vet apparel company (Scrubs, etc) had the busiest booth in the hall; fortunately, he was right across from us. RON FULLER, former OVMA President, came by and invited us to the Lake Erie meeting this summer. It was good to see DermaPet pal, DONN GRIFFITH, of VIN's alternative medicine folder. Once again BARRON HALL, dental resident extraordinaire, was also seen associating with one of MedRx's top sales reps, AMY MOATS.

Derm Dialogue tidbit

The Derm Dialogue is edited by ANN MATTISSE (Davisburg, Michigan). The following section was compiled by JAN HALL (Guelph University) when she chaired the Otitis Externa Roundtable at the 2001 AAVD meetings in Norfolk.

"Both white vinegar and water 1:3 and TrizEDTA were discussed favorably as flushing agents. Although concern has been expressed regarding the use of acidic solutions at the same time as flouroquinolones, the use of an acidic solution does not seem to affect the overall clinical performance."

Regarding Baytril otic: "Most...are keeping it in reserve for suppurative Otitis externa associated with Pseudomonas or other gram negative organisms. It was also mentioned that silver sulfadiazine does not generally perform well (for yeast it is only 75%), and yeasts have been known to grow on silver sulfadiazine products."

(Ed. Note. Our acetic/boric acid patented product was mentioned at this meeting and fulfills these criteria. Please refer to Gotthelf's article at our web site on its efficacy in treating and preventing Malassezia Otitis. The use of TrizEDTA at a pH of 8 (which is how it is commercially available) actually synergizes fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides whereas acidic solutions have long been known to diminish their efficacy.
