Ear Cleansers Newsletter

This month we will change the format of the Newsletter. We will lead with our practice tip; there are others in the body of the newsletter including how to use the lufenuron for ringworm. Due to the popularity of the only gossip column for the vet profession known to this writer, Yada, Yada follows.

"What are your favorite ear cleansing agents"
Otology Roundtable, Comp CE, 24, 3(A), 2002

Rod Rosychuk: ..As a mild cleansing agent with apparently superior germicidial effects to acetic acid, we also use a 2% acetic acid/2% boric acid cleanser (DermaPet). This product appears to work well for ears complicated by Malassezia colonization/infection, and we use it for chronic maintenance regimens (i.e., once or twice weekly flushing) in allergic patients prone to Malassezia infections.

Yada, Yada, Yada

Jack is back. JACK WHITE has signed a contract with DermaPet to return full time to the dermatology world as a VP, Business Development. Jack has more than 20 years experience serving the veterinary dermatology world.

Medrex Seminar, Los Angeles

LOU GOTTHELF and I participated in a golf-a-thon in Palm Desert prior to the seminar in LA. KEITH POULIOT joined us for one match. It is against the editorial policy for this space to brag, but...., guess who evened out the summer match this time? Hopefully, this will be a longstanding duel. Before real golfers decide to challenge us, be advised that one of our favorite clubs, and most frequently used, is the water pole.

Attending the seminar were ALEX WERNER, LA Vet Derm, fellow VINer and George Muller Hawaii derm attendees, ERIC WESTHEIMER (LA), GARY ROBERTS and DOUG KUNZ (Palm Springs). There was some buzz there about KEN KWOCHKA leaving OSU and coming to LA to work with JOHN PLANTE.

AAHA, Boston

The first day was surprisingly busy for an AAHA show, possibly due to the popularity of Boston. Empty isles were the rule, though, on the last day.

CAROL WELDIN, the Arm and Hammer and Dental Specialties lady, pointed out that she has been selected for extensive search at airports three times since January. The 5 foot 3 inch, petite blond is wondering what profile she fits. SAM CAMPBELL, our American Veterinary Exhibitors Association President has selected DermaPet's own GARY BOUGE as one of his directors. Dr. SOLA ALABA (VARL) asked how I could find the time to write this newsletter; Gary wondered why I didn't spend MORE time with it. Gary ate sushi with RON LACHARITE (VCA) where they discussed the VCA upcoming golf event (4/29) and the perfect driver. Another derm company exec was seen hanging out at our booth where we compared the relative stupidity of his Bulldog vs my Bassett, both bed-hogging, drooling beasts training their owners to the edge of control.

PIA HIEKKARRANTA, (Nanuet Anim Hosp, NY) came by to see our products for the first time after reading about us for years on the internet. "GABY" CASTRO (San Juan) was pleased to hear we added NCC of San Juan as a distributor. BEN ZIONY (Israel) of the ringworm study passed along the dose of lufenuron as 100 micrograms/kilogram/q 2 weeks for 3-4 times then culture.

Gary and I dined with GARY LANDSBERG, LOWELL ACKERMAN, WAYNE HUNTHAUSEN and LYN HUFFAKER (Hills) at Abe and Louie's. DAN SCOTT, son CHRIS and KENNY KEITH (Dan Scott Associates) were seen there with DANIEL FIELDS (ESC/Sharplan).

ED EISNER (Denver dentist) stopped by to get some Japanese slides and a business card for the World Dental Meeting in Japan next year. DARLENE ARDEN, of the Cat and Dog Writers Association stopped by to talk about her recent efforts. MERRY CRIMI (Milwaukie, Oregon), past AAHA President, along with vet management consultant LOUISE DUNN, were entertaining at the Pfizer function. STEVE ROGERS, Vice Mayor of Fairfax, VA offered Gary some stories of when we worked in the same group in DC. Fortunately, his credibility is reduced as a politician.

And AMY MOATS (MedRx) was seen again with BARRON HALL (Vet Dental resident, Dallas, TX); this time we want to congratulate them on their engagement to be married.

Washington DC Academy

SANDY MERCHANT did a well attended day on dermatology for a large (greater than 500 vets) group. Sandy wanted me to know that the crawfish were going to be in season for the derm meetings in N'Orleans.

NARENDER KHIANEY, PERVAIZ AND JAVIT MANZOOR and CATHERINE ROCKWELL came by. Much older classmate, MAX MANDEL, visited; Max wrote songs for the legendary Johnny Cash while in vet school. BOB MILLER, NOLAN RUBIN and RUDY FANARI also said hello as did countless others before I decided to write down some names for this space.

MARSHA REICH, Springfield, VA Vet Behaviorist chatted about Tail Mutilation disorder and Neurodermatitis. She brought up the fact that most of these cases should be radiographed to look for spinal disorders and recalled a paper on Syringomyelia and Hydromyelia in Dogs and Cats by Bagley et al in the Compendium, May 2000.

MedRx seminar, Philadelphia

In my alma maters and daughter Jessica's (PENN '03) hometown, globetrotting LOU GOTTHELF, was by assisted able GLEN TAYLOR, CHRIS PERRY and newcomer MIKE JECKEL. Classmate DOTTIE MILLER and LAURENCE STETLER, veterans of the PENN show attended. Traveling the furthest were DIANE WITTNER (Vestal, NY) and KEN FINE (CT).

The SHELF LIFE of the TrizEDTA has been questioned. We are RECOMMENDING SIX MONTHS after reconstitution despite data from Wooley indicating stability of at least 3 years. It also does not need to be refrigerated after reconstituting. The point is that the TrizEDTA is very stable, especially in the crystalline state. After application, the quicker it gets to body temperature the better. Once reaching body temp, it irreversibly neutralizes the enzyme, which causes tissue degradation. We originally had a 21-day expiration date post reconstitution on the label.

EUROPEAN VETS (and others worldwide): We are shipping TrizEDTA for $11.99 (per 4 ounce/cases of 12) INCLUDING SHIPPING BY FEDEX.

We will be in New Orleans on April 10-14 for the American Academy of Vet Dermatology meeting.

SALES REPS HIRED

Be there to hear LOU GOTTHELF teach you the latest, state of the art otology. Ears represent the #1 complaint of pet owners to vets (VPI insurance claims, 2000). Call 888-392-1234 to register or find out when one is coming near you.

GEMISH Information

Many people have said they cannot get Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (DSP) and want to know what to substitute. As long as the corticosteroid is of a similar strength and water soluble, it should be OK. However, one should not need to shake it, as is often the case with many injectable corticosteroids. Although I have a supply of DSP, one substitute others are using is Azium (Schering). The antibiotic selection may vary, as well, and may be omitted entirely when treating uncomplicated Malassezia otitis externa cases.
