TrizEDTA is Aqueous
We are releasing our Aqueous TrizEDTA, a ready to use, USP only, preservative-free, stable liquid form of our "crystal" TrizEDTA effective immediate with a Buy 9, Get 3 Introductory sale at $4.99/4 ounce and $9.99/16 ounce. The stable, crystalline form can be shipped inexpensively any where in the world.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Rumor is that an attempt has been made to copy our TrizEDTA. The merits of our USP pure version speak for themselves.
TrizEDTA uses USP only ingredients and is aqueous; it contains no alcohol, a substance that is considered ototoxic in cases where there is a ruptured tympanum. It is not suggested you use alcohol with our Crystal TrizEDTA since it can 'taint' it. There is no research indicating it is effective with alcohol; all research published over the last 20 years was based on the aqueous form. It is preservative free, with a stable and long three-year expiration date. The pH is 8.0 (7.5 to 8.0 is ideal for efficacy). It only contains de-ionized, demineralized water, which is key since minerals from water will deactivate the efficacy of TrizEDTA; one mechanism of action is to chelate minerals in the cell wall of bacteria. This product is safe to use in cases with ruptured tympanum which is most often the case with Pseudomonas Otitis (the #1 indication) since it "secretes" enzymes which virtually eat away tissue.
TrizEDTA, the only USP-pure tris-edta product, is a registered trademark owned
by DermaPet and is patent pending.
The Road
DermaPet employees earned their wings this month. Not including the wanderings of Jack and Gary, this person did the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology in New Orleans, visited NCC and vets in Puerto Rico, the VCA golf tournament in LA and the Ralph and Martha Lee show at Wrightsville Beach, NC.
AAVD, New Orleans (the real Dermatogossip)
So much knowledge, so many egos, so much fun in the Big Easy. We have been sworn to not name names, but...
This column was nicknamed "Dermato-gossip" by none other than Peter Ihrke (the Dick Clark of vet derm) according to two derms who threatened never to use our products if referred to as anything other than "blond bombshells." Credibility, being as important as it is to this column, that was an easy point in which to agree.
The Virbac bar hosted by Will Valentine, Doug Huburt et al, strategically located at the entry/exit to the hotel was where the action was, even though most derms found the French Quarter the tempting place to spend time. Gary, Jack and I want to thank them for truly being open to all attendees, especially us. Jimmy Noxon (program director) and Susan Fehrer-Sawyer (President) guided the program and group to new heights. Newsflash: Wine connoisseurs should mark Thursday night in Monterey, CA (the home of next years AAVD meeting) for a proposed wine party sponsored by DermaPet; we have received tentative commitments from Esc/Sharplan and MedRx as co-sponsors for this proposed event which is open to everyone.
Bob Dunstan, affable Texas A&M dermatopathologist, is moving back to Michigan to work for Pfizer. He will be sorely missed by co-workers Bob Kennis and Christine Rees and those who send him biopsies (yours truly). Welcome to industry, Bob. Bob Kennis came to New Orleans from the British Small Animal Vet Assoc meeting in Birmingham, UK where he claims to have called TrizEDTA his secret weapon in treating canine ear disease. Christine shared how well her Cocker has done on our DentAcetic Wipes (note: Christine, please tell the dental department at A&M.)
Word is Richard Halliwell will be retiring from Edinburgh. Many view Richard as a key mentor and THE leader in world derm circles. Methinks he will be flooded with opportunities even though he will quite busy as President elect of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The Canadian connection Steve Waisglass (Gary Landsberg's office-mate), Caroline DeJahm and Jan Hall were seen congregating at the opening reception where we were treated to oysters, shrimp, crawfish and much more. Nadie Znadja (UF 3rd year resident) told me she worked with Landsberg as a student. New residents Heather Willis (UF) and Elizabeth May (UT) made an impression. Mary Bagladi-Swanson misplaced a blue sweater. Pat Breen, Lou Gotthelf and Steve Young enjoyed cigars with me on the IVD riverboat cruise where I enjoyed talking with Rosanna Marsalis (UF) while waiting for the bus.
Australians David Robson and Linda Vogelnest traveled the furthest. Fresh, new face Ursala Mayer of Vienna, Austria invited us to visit during the WCVD 5. Charles Chen (Taiwan), Hans Koch (Germany), Didier Carlotti (France), 'Toshy' Iwasaki (Japan), In-Jae Yoo (Korea) and Bente Saevikj (Norway) were but a few of the many derms from abroad. Heidi Ortiz (Mexico) took back some TrizEDTA.
Michelle Rosenbaum captured the sentiment about the hotel when, after trying
3 rooms, she switched hotels at 2 AM. Jean Greek showed me two cards for her
Kansas City and Santa Barbara practices. Road warrior that she is, she found
it interesting how the airlines would not allow her syringes with allergy vaccine
on the plane but her needle holder to be ok. Linda Medleau claimed our Oolong
tea from Taiwan was her favorite and took what was left home to enjoy.
Lynette Cole was seen with Luc Beco (Belgium) and her fiancé at the Crazy
Corner. Amy Moats (MedRx), Jack, Gary and I also enjoyed this establishment.
Daniel Fields (Esc/Sharplan) was seen partying at a Bourbon Street establishment
and miraculously, punctually made it to the exhibits anyway.
On the afternoon off, Lou Gotthelf and I played golf. Lou was a speaker on the Laser Surgery presentation. On the occasion that our balls made the fairways, they were often under water anyway due to the previous wet weather. I must say the weather was perfect for the meeting.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Nicolas Carrillo Correa (NCC)
Gloria and I visited our friends Teresita Carrillo Matta , Lucia Hopun Martinez
and Jose Rivera Garces at NCC where we were received by doctors who opened their
doors and greeted us as visiting guests. Even in the chaos of practice, with
full workloads, the patient people of San Juan waited while their vets sat and
graciously visited with us. We saw 21 in all including Harold Lidin. At Jose
Diaz Umpierre's practice, Jose Arce thanked me for advising him of the lufenuron
dosage in last month's newsletter. At the same practice was Carlos Mongill,
a boarded surgeon who did his residency at Penn.
VCA golf tournament, MountainGate CC, LA
Organizers Ron LaCharite and Steve Fisher, who had shirts, hats and golf balls
on hand as well as breakfast, greeted Gary and I. At the driving range, we talked
with Bob Antin (VCA czar), Neal Tauber( VCA), former golf pro Ken Keith who
played with Dan Scott and Gary Cropp (HPSC), Marty Caron (VLS), Doug Catt (Vet
Healthcare) and Rod Miers (Pharmacia) to name a few. Thanks to Connie Bell,
Gary and I were able to play in the same foursome. Gary and I were forced to
rush out to meet travel obligations thus forfeiting any potential to win many
fantastic prizes. The reality was that our best chances remained in the raffle.
NC Academy, Wrighsville Beach, North Carolina
Ralph Lee and Ron Whitford brought in internationally known speakers such Lou
Gotthelf, Richard Halliwell and Larry Tilley to this beach meeting that was
attended by over 200 vets. This meeting was organized by the North Carolina
Academy under Tommy Needham's leadership. Meredith Miller hosted our table;
also there were Chris Perry (MedRx) and Chris Scott (Dan Scott).
What are your favorite ear cleansing agents"
Otology Roundtable, Comp CE, 24, 3(A), 2002
Rod Rosychuk: ..As a mild cleansing agent with apparently superior germicidal
effects to acetic acid, we also use a 2% acetic acid/2% boric acid cleanser
(DermaPet). This product appears to work well for ears complicated by Malassezia
colonization/infection, and we use it for chronic maintenance regimens (i.e.,
once or twice weekly flushing) in allergic patients prone to Malassezia infections.

The SHELF LIFE of the TrizEDTA has been questioned. Our label now RECOMMENDS
3 years. This is an incredibly stable product, especially when the source of
the product is in the crystalline state and USP quality. It also does not need
to be refrigerated after reconstituting. After application, the quicker it gets
to body temperature the better. Once reaching body temp, it irreversibly neutralizes
the catalase enzyme that causes tissue degradation.
EUROPEAN VETS (and others worldwide): We are shipping TrizEDTA for $11.99 (per
4 ounce/cases of 12) INCLUDING SHIPPING BY FEDEX.
MEETINGS
We will be in Dallas on May 29 for the American College of Vet Internal Medicine
meeting, Hiltonhead on June 6 for the GVMA (to see Lee Izen indicted as President),

SALES REPS
MEREDITH MILLER is in the Southeast. JACK WHITE is still serving Texas and GARY BOUGE is based in Tucson. PLEASE warmly welcome them in your practices as you would me. Remember, they (we) are here to serve your needs. We hope to have a NorthEast ready to work by June 1.
Many people have said they cannot get Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (DSP) and want to know what to substitute. As long as the corticosteroid is of a similar strength and water soluble, it should be OK. However, one should not need to shake it, as is often the case with many injectable corticosteroids. Although I have a supply of DSP, one substitute others are using is Azium (Schering). The antibiotic selection may vary, as well, and may be omitted entirely when treating uncomplicated Malassezia otitis externa cases.

NEW PACKAGING. The Ear/Skin Cleanser (2% acetic and 2% boric acids) is now
available in new packaging. For uniformity, we will change the name of the Ear/Skin
Cleanser to MalAcetic Otic in the near future. MalAcetic is a registered trademark
of DermaPet that signifies the product is patented and contains 2% acetic and
2% boric acids. The MalAcetic line now consists of the Ear/Skin Cleaner, MalAcetic
Wet Wipes, MalAcetic Shampoo and MalAcetic Conditioner.
Digital Photography Tip
600 x 400 is adequate for teaching images in dermatology (Bittorf, Diepgen et al). Compression ratios in JPEG can safely go up to 20 to one compression without concerns of loss of teaching value. Printing is much more demanding than computer displays (600 dpi v. 75 dpi), so a 600 x 400 pixel computer CRT image would correspond to a 4800 x 3200 pixel print image. In other words, keep the highest resolution available for archival and printing purposes and use the lower value images for teaching purposes. (Vetderm listserv)
