N3 FA Paper
The following is the entire verbatim 2nd page from USE
OF N-3 AND N-6 PUFA'S AS INDIVIDUAL SUPPLEMENTS by DAWN LOGAS in the ACVD/AAVVD
Proceedings, 2001. EicosaDerm is the most potent n-3 fatty acid meeting the
recommended dose of 180 mg/10 pounds.
Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) supplementation is used primarily
for it's anti-inflammatory properties. The most common reason for supplementation
is adjunctive therapy for Pruritic dermatoses such as atopy and insect bite
hypersensitivity. In one DOUBLE BLINDED STUDY 9/16 dogs showed at least a 50%
improvement in pruritus when supplemented with n-3 fatty PUFA's (Logas D and
Kunkle G. Double Blinded Crossover Study with Marine Oil Supplementation Containing
High Dose EPA for the Treatment of Canine Pruritic Skin Diseases. Vet Dermatol
1994: 5:99-104). Since doing this study, my clinical opinion is that half the
atopic and insect allergic dogs we diagnose improve with n-3 PUFA supplementation.
This improvement is noted in the first 3-4 weeks. I have also used n-3 PUFA's
in the treatment of lupoid onchodystrophy and discoid lupus erythematosus with
minimal success.
Finally, I use n-3 PUFA's in the treatment of generalized mast cell tumors,
mycosis fungoides and other neoplastic diseases. For squamous cell carcinoma,
mycosis fungoides and mast cell tumors n-3 PUFA's can decrease the inflammation
associated with these neoplasia. Omega 3 PUFA supplementation also helps to
decrease the anorexia and subsequent cachexia commonly associated with neoplastic
processes (Endres S et al. The Effects of Dietary Supplementation with N-3 Polyunsaturated
Fatty Acids on the Synthesis of IL-1 and Tumor Necrosis Factor by Mononuclear
Cells. The New England Journal of Medicine 1989; 320:265-271). Omega 3 PUFA's
reduce IL-1 and TNF both of which help to trigger cachexia normally associated
with neoplasia and other chronic debilitating diseases. Success of the supplement
in decreasing cachexia in the dog is hard to objectively evaluate since the
majority of these patients will succumb to their disease over time or be euthanized.
Clinically it appears that the cases I have placed on supplementation are more
comfortable and do maintain their body weight for a longer period of time.
While supplementing with N-3 PUFA's I normally use marine oil. The dose is based
on the amount of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in the supplement. The dose is
180 mg of EPA per 10 lb of body weight. I have noted few side effects at this
dose with the exception of an occasional GI upset and "fish breath."
One potentially severe side effect that is worried about is a decrease in normal
platelet functions. This has not been seen clinically and in an unpublished
study there was no significant increase in bleeding times or change in platelet
function in dogs supplemented with high dose EPA (180 mg/10lb) for a six-month
period.
LOU GOTTHELF and the MedRx gypsies showed up in Washington DC for their traveling otology show. Lou joined COO CHRIS VON STEIN, wife Angie and CFO DAVE BROWN for a dinner meticulously prepared (catered!) by GLORIA, also known to insiders as THE CONTROLLER. Sadly, CHRIS PERRY and GLENN TAYLOR took a rain check on the festivities due to job responsibilities.
Colonial Conference, Williamsburg, VA
Despite a horrible snowstorm and record setting cold front, amazingly, almost
everybody showed up for this show (although stories were common about travel
hardships). RALPH LEE, when asked if they would cancel due to weather, responded
that "the game is on; they don't cancel football due to bad weather, do
they?" Ralph actually wore something besides his regular favorite cranberry
sport coat on one of the show days causing Gloria to ask why? LOU GOTTHELF did
his Otology seminar, RON WHITFORD presented practice management, PHILLIP BERGMAN
(AMC and VIN onco-monitor) did cancer and other national level speakers presented
as well. BRIAN HUBER of www.oncurapartners.com helped Gloria set up the booth.
CHRIS SCOTT had the most attention at his booth with his TV showing the VA Tech/Miami
game. JIM O'LEARY (Pittsburgh) introduced himself to me as my classmate; I reminded
him that many people who went to college in the 70's now have CRS although I
do remember him. Roadrunner donated a Kawasaki All Terrain vehicle, which was
raffled off to a very full room and won by Jean Krayson.
National Student Rep JESSICA MELMAN participated in the SCAVMA auction at PENN
where she acquired the actual photos used on the cover of USA Today of our K9
Heroes of 9/11.
Kudos to MARK GIBSON (Brooklyn) whose face is plastered in Apple Ads as having a 12 Mac, 60-person practice. Readers will recall Mark was at the George Muller Derm Conf in Maui last year playing golf and this year seen at in Atlantic City Conference.
***NEWSFLASH***
Dogs and cats from the United States and Canada will soon be allowed to enter Britain without a six-month quarantine. The government announced that from Dec. 11 its ``pet passport'' plan for vaccinated animals from Western Europe and some other countries will be extended to cats and dogs from the United States and Canada.
A male Black Persian was named the world's "Best in show" of more than 1300 pedigreed felines showcased at the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) International Cat Show held Nov 22-24 in Houston.
Last month I wrote, "Those who share my thinking that more Behavior at derm meetings would be welcomed should let it be known." STEVE JOSEPH (IVD) responded "are you interested in more or less good behavior or more or less bad behavior?" It's good to see people actually read this newsletter :).
EicosaDerm as an Appetite Stimulant and with Cancer (we now have a New England Journal of Medicine Reference)
Early reports support EicosaDerm as an appetite stimulant due to its high palatability. Especially in onco and geriatric cases, it is important to maintain the appetite. We suggest placing it on the top of food.
"Omega 6 Fatty acids may interfere with cancer healing", say many oncology experts based on many scientific publications while omega 3 fatty acids help fight cancer. This supports the use of our EicosaDerm, the most potent omega 3 fatty acid supplement containing no omega 6 PUFAs.
Jim Wilson, DVM (Texas), "the ole stirring stick", responded to the following paragraph "The big thing with all dry dog foods that say they contain FA supplementations is that they are not impervious to air (and light) moving through the bag, thus they begin to get rancid from the git-go. All FA (containing dog food) should be air tight, and refrig. After opened."
Apparently excess heat changes the omega 3 fatty acids to a trans form, which
is undesirable. Thus dry dog food as a reliable high dose source is unlikely.
We have noted some dry dog foods that claim to contain all the n3 fatty acids
necessary despite not detailing even the approximate amount of EPA or DHA on
the label. Attempts to find the exact amount have been met with the answer that
they are "proprietary." It would seem difficult to ensure consistency
in dosage of fatty acids if sprayed after 'processing', which may explain the
lack of forthrightness by reputed dog food manufacturers.

The following letter is about our DentAcetic pads by an internationally known board certified dentist.
I've had the pleasure to use DentAcetic Wipes (DermaPet Inc.) in my practice for the past twelve months as a home care product to help control plaque. Overall the client and patient acceptance of the wipes have been positive as well as the apparent control of plaque when used daily.
My clients like the smell and ease of use. They appreciate that their pets enjoy the taste and smell, as well. I still believe that daily tooth brushing is the best way to control plaque, but for whatever reason most clients cannot get the tooth brushing process down so they do nothing and the patient suffers. With the DentAcetic Wipes, the overall client/patient experience is pleasant which reinforces compliance. Compliance, of course, is the key to pet dental home care.
In the exam room I remove one of the pads from the container and show the client how easy it is to use in a circular rubbing fashion on the buccal surfaces of the cheek teeth. Then I usually explain that the wipes contain sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) which decrease the mineralization of plaque to calculus. Acetic Acid is also a sequestering and cleansing agent which decreases topical plaque.
The DentAcetic Wipes have worked well in my practice and I plan to continue to use and recommend the product as part of our home care program.
