January 2003
TNAVC Orlando 1/03
Yada, Yada, Yada
Over the holidays very little occurred in the way of gossip. The most important is that we are pleased to announce that CHUCK MICHAELS is once again back with us as our regional rep for the Northeast. Many of you already know and like Chuck from his previous years with us. We are also searching for reps for the Southeast and Texas regions.
We will be in Orlando at The NAVC meeting, January 18-21 in our new, double sized booth (#1208-1210). We should be right next to IVD in the center of the room as you come in, depending upon which entrance is the main one. Visit JACK WHITE, MEREDITH MILLER, LISA LORENZINI, CHUCK MICHAELS and Yours Truly.
National Student Rep JESSICA MELMAN will be visiting the derm department at UC/Davis under the tutelage of derm guru PETER IHRKE for an externship. She will be back in time to be with us at the PENN meetings, January 29-30 in Philadelphia.
We know we will also be in Vegas for the WVC at Booths 844-846 on February 17-19, in Columbus, Ohio for the OVMA on February 18-23 and in Nashville, Tennessee for the TVMA on February 21-23. In Nashville, I will present "New Approach to the Dog with Pruritic Otitis" which merges Shampoo Therapy, Seven Steps to Treating Ears with a Pruritic Clinical Trial.
For those who have not read the Inno-vet newsletter or visited the web site at www.inno-vet.com please do. It is written and compiled by RAY MARCUS who is also the editor of the WSAVA home page http://www.wsava.org.
The following is the entire verbatim 2nd page from USE OF N-3 AND N-6 PUFA'S AS INDIVIDUAL SUPPLEMENTS by DAWN LOGAS in the ACVD/AAVD Proceedings, 2001 (this article is posted in it's entirety at our web site). EicosaDerm is the most potent n-3 fatty acid meeting the recommended dose of 180 mg/10 pounds.
Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) supplementation is used primarily
for it's anti-inflammatory properties. The most common reason for supplementation
is adjunctive therapy for Pruritic dermatoses such as atopy and insect bite
hypersensitivity. In one DOUBLE BLINDED STUDY 9/16 dogs showed at least a 50%
improvement in pruritus when supplemented with n-3 fatty PUFA's (Logas D and
Kunkle G. Double Blinded Crossover Study with Marine Oil Supplementation Containing
High Dose EPA for the Treatment of Canine Pruritic Skin Diseases. Vet Dermatol
1994: 5:99-104). Since doing this study, my clinical opinion is that half the
atopic and insect allergic dogs we diagnose improve with n-3 PUFA supplementation.
This improvement is noted in the first 3-4 weeks. I have also used n-3 PUFA's
in the treatment of lupoid onchodystrophy and discoid lupus erythematosus with
minimal success.
Finally, I use n-3 PUFA's in the treatment of generalized mast cell tumors,
mycosis fungoides and other neoplastic diseases. For squamous cell carcinoma,
mycosis fungoides and mast cell tumors n-3 PUFA's can decrease the inflammation
associated with these neoplasia. Omega 3 PUFA supplementation also helps to
decrease the anorexia and subsequent cachexia commonly associated with neoplastic
processes (Endres S et al. The Effects of Dietary Supplementation with N-3 Polyunsaturated
Fatty Acids on the Synthesis of IL-1 and Tumor Necrosis Factor by Mononuclear
Cells. The New England Journal of Medicine 1989; 320:265-271). Omega 3 PUFA's
reduce IL-1 and TNF both of which help to trigger cachexia normally associated
with neoplasia and other chronic debilitating diseases. Success of the supplement
in decreasing cachexia in the dog is hard to objectively evaluate since the
majority of these patients will succumb to their disease over time or be euthanized.
Clinically it appears that the cases I have placed on supplementation are more
comfortable and do maintain their body weight for a longer period of time.
While supplementing with N-3 PUFA's I normally use marine oil. The dose is based
on the amount of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in the supplement. The dose is
180 mg of EPA per 10 lb of body weight. I have noted few side effects at this
dose with the exception of an occasional GI upset and "fish breath."
One potentially severe side effect that is worried about is a decrease in normal
platelet functions. This has not been seen clinically and in an unpublished
study there was no significant increase in bleeding times or change in platelet
function in dogs supplemented with high dose EPA (180 mg/10lb) for a six-month
period.
After you eat your fish oil, try some yogurt. According to research at the
University of Nebraska, bacteria commonly used in yogurt looks promising as
a feed additive or a vaccine that can kill E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria in beef
cattle. Feeding selected strains of the bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus,
commonly used in yogurt, reduced E. coli in manure 61% of the time. (Reuters)
