Fish Oil vs Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

There is some confusion, which may be generated by marketing from companies with fish oil products, that needs to be cleared up. First, the correct dose is 180 mg of EPA/10 pounds/day. The best source of EPA is fish oil which, depending on its type, will have various amounts of EPA. High quality fish oil needs to be used; this should not to be confused with menhaden or most fish sources used in products on the vet market. A product may say it contains 180 mg of fish oil in their product, which to this writer appears to be very close to intentional deception. EicosaDerm uses 1,000 mg/ml of the highest quality fish oil (as it relates to maximizing EPA/DHA content) to deliver the 180 mg/ml of EPA and 120 mg/ml of DHA. Read labels carefully.

For example, one dog food claims it has all the necessary fatty acids but does not elaborate on source, quantity or specific quality declaring that info to be "proprietary" in a "trust us" tone. Another company admits deficiency in quantity of EPA asking vets to dose patients with multiple-often 6-10- caps of an omega 3 based supplement to meet the dosage requirement.

FEEDBACK

Drs. PAUL FRANCOIS and GEOFF CAMPBELL at General Booth Veterinary Hospital (VA Beach, VA) had a 10 yr old Golden suffering from long term non-specific pruritus responsive to diphenhydramine whose skin cleared and was able to stop medication as a result of using EicosaDerm for just under one month.

ORLANDO, TNAVC

Over 16,200 people from over 65 different countries swarmed the 20th Anniversary of The NAVC (www.navconline.com) which spread over 3 hotels. Chance encounters that occurred once were often not repeated due to the vastness of the meeting. If there was any negative comment, it was that people found the Gaylord too hard to access since it did not allow auto access to non-guests; this made buses, guest's cars or taxis the only way non-guests could get there. NAVC organizer extraordinaire, COLIN BURROWS, promises this will be repaired next year. The Gaylord also has the curious distinction of being, perhaps, the largest US hotel I have ever stayed at without a bar/restaurant with a TV, dismaying many who wanted to watch sports. This was the trade off for having a trade show hall that was able to handle all of the 444 exhibitors under one roof and a much improved convention center for seminars and entertainment. Hootie and The Blowfish led the entertainment that included a fabulolus exhibitor/speaker party and many well attended events. I wonder why the WVC in Vegas, like TNAVC, doesn't have as many sponsored events/refreshments?

LISA LORENZINI, CHUCK MICHAELS, son MARK MICHAELS, MEREDITH MILLER and JACK WHITE manned our booth.

Upon arrival, at the DVM Newsmagazine golf tournament where our team led by CHRIS SCOTT and KEN KEITH (Dan Scott Associates) placed third, congratulations went to the OSU BUCKEYES for being this years #1 College Football team. Speaking of football, RON BUCK (MedRx owner) enjoyed entertaining people with his musical TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS doll; my congratulations to him and all the Tampa fans whose team won the Super Bowl.

I got to spend some quality time with dentists PETER EMILY, JAN BELLOWS and GARY BEARD. GARY LANDSBERG, ILANA REISNER (PENN and Jessica's behavior mentor) and DEBORAH HOROWITZ (St L) also stopped by to say hello. Dermatologists KEN KWOCHKA (LA), STEPHEN WHITE (UC/DAVIS), DIDER CARLOTTI (France), LOWELL ACKERMAN (Tufts) and MARV SAMUELSON (VARL/Phoenix) visited. Marv reminded us to book our hotels for the AAHA meeting in Phoenix early as it was baseball training camp season. In a brief return from his sabbatical in France, GREG OGILVIE recommended EPA/DHA for many onco cases. Media vet JEFF WERBER (LA) told me he reads our newsletter. Alternative medicine gurus JOHN and P.T. LIMEHOUSE (LA) shared some thoughts about other natural remedies and that they liked our EicosaDerm and other natural products. CARVEL TIEKERT (Belair, MD) paid his regards on the plane home. Classmates HAROLD ALTERMAN (N VA) and STU PORTER (VA) visited. Of course, LOU GOTTHELF spent some rare down time together.

JOHN PINKERMAN (Suburban cages) was there without his wife Ronnie. They plan on joining us in BANGKOK for the WSAVA October 23-26. Speaking of the WSAVA, SANIT KARUNYAWANIT, Dr.PARNTEP RATTANAKORN, secretariat of the WSAVA Thailand, dean of vet school Mahidol University and Dr.TANIN SANTIWATTANATHAM, whose clinic I visited in Thailand were cheerfully recruiting visitors for the meeting. The four of us took a picture in front of the DermaPet booth that I hope to recreate in Thailand.

TERESITA CARRILLO MATTA (Puerto Rico) and Dr. KAREN SEIJAS SOTO (Dominican Republic) visited from the Caribbean. DRAKE SNEED (Intravet) reminded me of how we discussed perks and expense accounts for employees previously.

PENN meeting

All tuition paying parents will know my elation when I wrote my last tuition check for Jessica (PENN "03). CHUCK MICHAELS and JACK WHITE manned the booth. As we continue to grow, we will be adding reps in Chicago, Atlanta, Tampa and Dallas.

MARK KATZ (Wheaton, MD), DITTIE WEITZMAN (Potomac, MD) and dermatologist BARB KUMMEL (Gaithersburg, MD) paid their respects. Dean ALAN KELLY did his best to separate alumni from their money, seeking to support the new building and students.

Classmates CATHY WALLEIGH-CARNEVALE (FDA), FRANK BORZIO (Staten Island), DON FORD (Philly), DAN EUBANKS, MIKE SCHADEN (Frederick, MD), JOHN POTE (Kennett Square, PA), ED MOLESWORTH (Baltimore), JIM HYSSONG and BOB CUSANO were all seen there. As were classmate HENRY NEBZYDOWSKI'S brothers ANDY and JOSEPH.

The show has grown to require an additional room for exhibitors. To handle this growth, most participants look forward to the day when the show will graduate from the Adam's Mark to a Center City location.

Veterinary Charity Begins With AVMF

BOB GORDON (Oakland, NJ/ RGordonDVM@aol.com) who saved a cat toy in Atlantic City wants everyone to accept the HILL'S CHALLENGE. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and Hill's Pet Nutrition have announced a matching gift program. Hill's will donate $10,000 to the AVMF for every 1,000 new veterinary donors who contribute to the Foundation. The AVMF is the charitable arm of the veterinary profession. Methinks everyone should donate whatever they can afford-but to be sure to give at least $1-- to maximize the Hill's contribution. Go to www.avmf.org or call Bob or PAUL AMUNDSEN (PAmundsen@avma.org) at 800-248-2862 X4355.

MEETINGS

We will be in Vegas for the WVC at Booths 844-846 on February 17-19, in Columbus, Ohio for the OVMA on February 18-23, in Nashville, Tennessee for the TVMA on February 21-23 and in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterey March 4-7. In Nashville and Mexico, I will present "New Approach to the Dog with Pruritic Otitis" which merges Shampoo Therapy, Seven Steps to Treating Ears with a Pruritic Clinical Trial.
