EicosaDerm Smells Fishy No More

Putracine is the component in fish oil that causes the unpleasant (to humans) odor. PAUL PION (VIN czar himself) first notified me of this tidbit, which was later confirmed by others. In another DermaPet first to the veterinary market, EICOSADERM, the strongest n3FA (180 mg EPA/ml/10#), will soon also come in a form where the putracine is extracted. Not only will EicosaDerm taste great to pets but smell better to their human owners who occasionally complain of their pets having "fish breath." Give the new EicosaDerm the NASAL APPRAISAL.

FEEDBACK

ELEANOR DUNN (Oakland, CA) wrote "I have a lot of clients that are no longer willing to give their animals fish oils after the work in people that showed toxic mercury levels in people that ate fish more than once a week or took fish oil capsules. Have you tested your oils for heavy metals such as mercury, and can you tell me the levels to reassure them?" EICOSADERM's contents have been tested to have no detectable level of mercury and are also starch, sugar and cholesterol free.

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.

JOB OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for Territory Managers in ATLANTA, TAMPA, ORLANDO and CHICAGO. Contact Jack White at jag6410@aol.com or call 866-DERMAPE if you want to apply. Willingness to travel, a car, computer and a college degree are required.

BOOK REVIEW

Small Animal Surgery, Second Edition, Fossum, Mosby 2002
Designed for small animal practitioners as well as veterinary students, there are true to life pictures and numerous detailed illustrations. Information is presented in a very organized, user-friendly manner. It provides the modern veterinary surgeon with all the essential tools from diagnosis, surgery and post-op care to prognosis. Jessica Melman (PENN 03).

Yada, Yada, Yada

Las Vegas, WVC

Again ALAN GARETT (Corpus Christi) manned the DermaPet booth in his usual jovial fashion as did JACK WHITE, LISA LORENZINI (West Coast TM) and even DAVE BROWN, our energetic CFO. We welcomed PATRICK RAYBURN who worked his first show with us and will be our Southwest Territory Manager.

BERT DODD (Austin), BOB WIGGS (Dallas) and PETER EMILY (Denver) educated me as to the use of EDTA in dentistry during a luncheon. Laser-Czar DANIEL FIELDS (ESC/Sharplan), "Tonopen" DAN and CHRIS SCOTT were at the center of the social scene, as usual. BOB STEVENSON (CENTRAL SALES, CANADA) visited. JIM and SUE ADAMS (Deltavet), our distributors in Australia, brought sons BEN and CHRIS. They hung out with WALLY SCHMIDT (Precision Medical Instruments). SOLA ALBALA (VARL) and hard-working daughter, SEYI, manned their booth with MARV SAMUELSON. WAYNE REHM (AVMA PLIT) advised me that the key the key to good insurance was to not make any claims. JILL CLINE (Purina) who was also with us in Eze, France and Granada, Spain, said hello. MERVYN LEVIN (Spectrum Labs) brought word about the family of the late ISRAEL BLEICH (San Paolo). Alan, Gloria and I enjoyed a dinner with JOHN PINKERMAN (Suburban Cages).

Dr. TAE-HO, OH of Kyungpook National University in Korea told me he translated my chapter in Gotthelf's book for the Korean version. He also notified me of the ASIAN VETERINARY DERMATOLOGY CONFERENCE in Korea on November 23, 2003. Dr. HENRY YU advised me that there were over 50 Korean vets in attendance and it seemed like they all visited. They were advised to contact SEAH, our distributor there.

RANDY SHIMKUS (Hill's) and STAN NIEMANN (Freeburg, IL), a couple of my students from my resident days at Illinois said hello. My classmate, JAMES KREWATCH (Wexford, PA) paid respects. HENRY RANDAZZO (Palm Desert), RICHARD GEBHART (Redding) and soon to be a vet TRAVIS HOWARTH, visited the booth. VCA moguls BOB ANTIN and NEAL TAUBER -who bought their first hospital from Richard Gebhardt (West LA)- even appeared in the trade show hall. LOWELL ACKERMAN (Tufts), JEAN GREEK (KC/Santa Barbara), SANDY MERCHANT (LSU) and GARY LANDSBERG (Toronto) were on the program and visited. ANDREA CANNON (Fair Oaks, CA) also said hello.

There are as many people whose names and the situation they were seen in that are NOT mentioned in this newsletter that surely should be appreciative. Of course, after making a regretful, overly complimentary introduction to a new one on the west coast last year that I am paying for dearly, DermaPet rarely mentions the names of distributors in this newsletter.

OVMA, Columbus, Ohio

Yes, JACK WHITE braved the weather and left Vegas on Wednesday to be ready to work the OVMA on Thursday. CHUCK MICHAELS, unable to catch a plane, DROVE despite the blizzard of '03 from DC to Columbus to pick Jack up and work the show. We are ever so grateful that one of the speakers, a well known dermoid who is also respected in nutritional circles, plugged our EicosaDerm enough to send people to the booth. Snow got in the way of, but, did not slow down this meeting.

TVMA

From Vegas, I went to join Nashville to join CHRIS VON STEIN, our COO, who was forced into booth work by the 3 almost simultaneous shows. Thanks to GAYLE MILLARD (Colliersville), LOU GOTTHELF and I delivered a full day of ear seminars to an enthusiastic and frustrated-by-ears audience. CYNTHIA BASTIN (MedRx) set up a video-vetscope for demonstration purposes. I finally got to meet DONALD PEARL (Ft. Lauderdale) who introduced himself as my brother-in-law's vet. Shockingly, it even snowed in Nashville.

A researcher from Tulane University has identified the major shrimp allergen, a muscle protein called tropomysin, which can cause allergic responses of itchiness around the eyes, throat, skin and mouth. By using biotechnology, researchers are attempting to modify the protein's amino-acid sequence in an attempt to make shrimp allergen-free. The researchers are modifying the protein's amino acid sequence so that it cannot bind with IgE.

MEETINGS

We will be in Mexico City at the Presidente Hotel on March 5, Monterey at the Chamber of Commerce on March 6 and Guadalajara at the Chamber of Commerce on March 7. Starting at 7:30 PM, we will discuss "New Approach to the Dog with Pruritic Otitis" which merges Shampoo Therapy, Seven Steps to Treating Ears with a Pruritic Clinical Trial. We will also be at AAHA in PHOENIX on March 23-25.

MedRx is offering CE with EAR Seminars by LOU GOTTHELF on the road next in LOUISVILLE on March 2, BILOXI on 3/9 and LONG ISLAND on April 6. Call 888-392-1234 to register or find out when one is coming near you.

Veterinary Charity Begins With AVMF
BOB GORDON (Oakland, NJ/ RGordonDVM@aol.com) wants everyone to accept the HILL'S CHALLENGE. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and Hill's Pet Nutrition have announced a matching gift program. Hill's will donate $10,000 to the AVMF for every 1,000 new veterinary donors who contribute to the Foundation. The AVMF is the charitable arm of the veterinary profession. Methinks everyone should donate whatever they can afford-but to be sure to give at least $1-- to maximize the Hill's contribution. Go to www.avmf.org or call Bob or PAUL AMUNDSEN at 800-248-2862 X4355.
