FISH OIL TIDBITS
www.expasy.org
A great web site showing how fatty acids break down into pro and non inflammatory metabolites.

"Both EPA (20:5w3) and DHA (22:6w3) are normal components of our cells. They are especially abundant in the inner ear, brain cells, nerve relay stations (synapses), visual receptors (the retina), adrenal glands and sex glands- the most biochemically active tissues of the body. EPA and DHA can be manufactured by healthy cells from the essential w3 fatty acid, alpha-linoleic acid (LNA, 18:3w3). They have extremely low melting points, are highly unsaturated and have a strong urge to dispurse, thus they will not harden or aggregate. They also prevent other fats from hardening or aggregating."

Potential Adverse Effects of Long-Term Consumption of (n-3) Fatty Acids. Hall J. Compend Contin Educ Pract Vet 18[8]:879-895 Aug'96 The potential therapeutic benefits of dietary supplementation with (n-3) fatty acids (also called omega-3 fatty acids) have aroused great interest, especially for the treatment of inflammatory disorders. Many products containing these fatty acids are marketed for administration to dogs or cats. These products seem to be very safe as currently used; however, studies of the effects of their long-term administration to dogs and cats are lacking. This article discusses the potential adverse effects, extrapolated from studies in other animals and in humans. The major safety issues of long-term dietary intake of (n-3) fatty acids include increased tissue lipid peroxidation (LP), a risk of bleeding, and immunoincompetence. LP appears to pose less of a problem if antioxidants are given simultaneously; there is no evidence that the (n-3) fatty acids contribute to clinically significant bleeding problems in dogs or cats. Clinical trials of the therapeutic benefits of these fatty acids will doubtless yield more information on the safety of these supplements. (Author Abstract)

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.

Yada, Yada, Yada

Mexico

Mexico City

After arriving the night before, sightseeing and a 3 PM dinner complete with the most amazing margaritas, the 8 PM lecture came quickly. While our host ARTURO BRAVO of BravoVet, his sister Terri, lovely wife Mercedes, nephew GERMAN SUAREZ and son, Arturo, Jr worked as close to 75 vets listened during my presentation of 7 Steps to Treating Ears, a Pruritic Clinical Trial and Shampoo Therapy. It will be difficult to forget the traffic in Mexico City where one definition of a minimal aggressive driving violation starts with leaving the scene of an accident and the Right-of-Way is based somewhere between the size of the car and the driver's mood. Drugs really are cheaper; there are Pharmacia everywhere including at airports. This is the home city for the WSAVA for 2005.

Monterey
The next morning, Arturo, Gloria, Dr. LETTI TORRES and Dr. MARCO GARCIA set out for Monterey where GILBERTO TRAVINO, our local distributor, greeted us. After the seminar, attended by close to 100, there was food and tequila for all. About noon the next day, we flew to our next stop.

Guadalajara
We arrived at the home of tequila manufacture and many American medical and veterinary students in time for our late lunch hosted by ANGEL CASTALLANOS, our local distributor. The seminar started late (about 9:30 PM) before more than 200 enthusiastic vets who kept coming even after we started. The seminar hall was shared with a party scene below where I competed with 6 dancers and a full band playing the Mexican Hat Dance. Celebrating the end of the 3 city seminar tour, Arturo took me and a large group to sample some of the best tequila money could buy and taught me some interesting Mexican phrases. I am still recovering as you read this. I breakfasted with FERNANDO VASQUEZ ROJAS, who many of us knew from a "previous employer" but now heads Novartis Mexico. JOSE ACUNA and his cute assistant, ARECELI, took us sightseeing, shopping and to the airport.

Phoenix, AAHA
What they did not have in numbers, AAHA offers in quality of attendees. Only a few people attended the IVD Award, which went to JOSEPH TABODA (husband of derm's own SANDY MERCHANT). I recall being at this presentation in a packed hall in Toronto before GARY LANDSBURG corrected any illusion that he was from the USA, with great pride and humor, upon receiving the Friskies Award. STEVE JOSEPH, who was charged with presenting the award, wasn't sure whether he was in the right place at the wrong time; the wrong place at the right time or somebody just messed up.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by CHET ANDERSON (Poolesville, MD). STEVE ROGERS (VA) is correct feeling that this is a meeting primarily of animal hospital owners, an exhibitor's ideal lead. Both Steve and Chet worked for my father when they graduated vet school. Classmates PAUL GAMBERDELLA (Oradell, NJ) and KEN FELIX (Erie, PA) attended. DAN CANFIELD (Seattle, WA) predicted correctly that Gloria was out shopping when he didn't notice her in the hall. We learned that dental-diva CAROL WELDON will assist DAVE NEILSON (Manhattan Beach, CA) in a dental seminar in South Dakota this summer. I also ran into old acquaintances JEFFREY MARKS (LA, CA), as well as JENNIFER TRUJILLO and PETER GLASSMAN (Friendship, DC), JON RAPPAPORT (Miami) and ANITA WALLACE (N VA). Always upbeat, AVEA honcho SAM CAMPBELL mentioned that the well-attended OVMA was approached re excessively long exhibit hours, too many trade show days and poor timing after the Vegas meeting.

Veterinary Charity Begins With AVMF
BOB GORDON (Oakland, NJ/ RGordonDVM@aol.com) wants everyone to accept the HILL'S CHALLENGE. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and Hill's Pet Nutrition have announced a matching gift program. Hill's will donate $10,000 to the AVMF for every 1,000 new veterinary donors who contribute to the Foundation. The AVMF is the charitable arm of the veterinary profession. Methinks everyone should donate whatever they can afford-but to be sure to give at least $1-- to maximize the Hill's contribution. Go to www.avmf.org or call Bob or PAUL AMUNDSEN at 800-248-2862 X4355.

For those who have not read the Inno-vet newsletter or visited the web site at www.inno-vet.com please do. It is written and compiled by RAY MARCUS who is also the editor of the WSAVA home page http://www.wsava.org.
