Evaluation of the IN VITRO Effect of TrizEDTA on the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Enrofloxacin Against Ciprofloxacin Resistant PSEUDOMONAS Aeruginosa.
GOTTHELF L and Gbadamosi S (AAVD presentation)

This study examined the in vitro effect of TrizEDTA on the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of enrofloxacin (ENRO) against 12 strains of ciprofloxacin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bacterial strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin (MIC>2 µg/ml, and 5 µg/ml disks). Minimally passaged cultures of the bacterial strains were grown on nutrient agar, and suspended in 50 mM tris hydrochloride solution at a concentration equivalent to 0.5 McFarland turbidity standard, optical density(OD) range of 0.08 to 0.10 according to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS) recommendation. To determine the endpoint MIC, the bacterial suspensions were incubated at 37º C for 30 minutes, and were then transferred into wells of microtiter plates containing two-fold dilutions of ENRO in Mueller-Hinton broth. Following overnight incubation at 37º C, wells were examined to determine the endpoint MIC of ENRO against each bacterial strain. Bacterial cultures wer!
e resistant to ENRO at endpoint MICs ranging from 227 µg/ml to 7.09 µg/ml The same protocol was repeated after TrizEDTA exposure for 5 minutes at 37º C. Susceptibility to ENRO MIC decreased to lower than 1.7 µg/ml for all strains. These observations were further evaluated using 10X bacterial concentrations with similar results. These findings suggest that TrizEDTA EXHIBITS A SPARING IN VITRO EFFECT on the MIC of enrofloxacin against ciprofloxacin resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa AND MAY BENEFIT TREATMENT of otitis externa (and media) infections with both susceptible and resistant Pseudomonas bacteria.

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.

Graduation, PENN, Class of 2003
Reunion, Class of "73

Normally this section is to report about past experiences. I am making an exception in that I anticipate JESSICA'S graduation on May 19 to be a special day. Already over the fact that there are no more PENN tuitions, I am looking forward to a PENN tradition where an alumni parent dresses in cap and gown and gives the diploma to his child. Sadly, my colleague and good friend, Dean ALAN KELLY, will not be able to stand with us while he recovers from surgery for a subdural hematoma.

American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology/ AAVD
Monterey, CA

JACK WHITE and I arrived in time for the whirlwind meeting, which was attended by most derm experts across the planet Earth. While waiting for my first conference, DAN MORRIS (PENN) offered me kind words about JESSICA. CHERYL SKOLNICK (Denver) and ALEXIS BERROCAL (Costa Rica) joined us for dinner at the same restaurant as Virbac was entertaining the residents. Again the Virbac suite, hosted by DOUG HUBERT and WILL VALENTINE welcomed all and was the place to be for good cheer and libations.

MARV SAMUELSON noticed my car disappearing into the horizon as we both were leaving AAHA from Phoenix. STEVE YOUNG took a break for a tattoo which could make him a poster boy for flea control. ANDREW MILLS and PAT MCKEEVER (Minneapolis) empathized with me about the bad weather we had in the east this winter. Canadian's LOWELL ACKERMAN (Tufts), JAN HALL (Guelph) and STEVE WAISGLASS (Toronto) were seen discussing Jan and Steve's treatment plan for end-stage ear disease. Lowell and GENE NESBITT (TUFTS) claimed they talk more at this meeting than at Tufts. HEIDI ORTIZ and I talked about how I just missed her when I visited Mexico City and the "other" Monterey.

Although PENNY GOTTHELF was walking with a clear limp when she and LOU picked me up at the airport, the next night she miraculously recovered to dance up a storm at the IVD party held at Chateau Julian. The band played for 2 straight hours and kept the crowd, having consumed great quantities of tasty wine, dancing non-stop. RALF MUELLER and SONJA BETTENAY (CSU) demonstrated great talent including what seemed like acrobatics by Ralf and another dance partner. KERSTI BERGWALD (Sweden), CAROLINE DeJAHM (Montreal), YESUYO YAMAZAKI (OR) and many others were seen dancing and having fun. Thank you, IVD, STEVE JOSEPH and PETE BICART et al.

DOUG DEBOER (Wisc) won the ACVD Award for Excellence in Veterinary Dermatology. This is the highest annual honor given to veterinary dermatologists. Congratulations, Doug. We look forward to seeing you at the SEVC Conference in Myrtle Beach, June 11-15.

Again JIMMY NOXON (ISU) and SUSAN FEHRER-SAWYER (S FL) did an excellent job for the AAVD.

Surprisingly, the Roundtables were well attended at 0730 the next morning. PAUL BLOOM (MSU) chaired the one on Ear Flushing. We were fortunate to have Paul who, due to a hockey accident, had to buy two tickets to keep his leg elevated while flying. There were many MalAcetic Otic users in the group so I decided to do the PC thing and leave when Paul asked about specific products. Between the Ear Flush and the Pseudomonas otitis roundtable, there was a virtual who's who of veterinary otology.

There are as many people whose names and the situation they were seen in that are NOT mentioned in this newsletter that surely should be appreciative
