DermaPet Vision Statement
DermaPet Mission Statement
A prominent veterinary pharmaceutical company has adopted another DermaPet product and concept by changing their product to conform to EicosaDerm's 180 mg EPA/10 pounds of body weight/day. DermaPet is proud to have brought this quality fish oil product to the market first and welcomes the marketing efforts on the part of this giant company to prove our point. Imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery. One person in the industry even joked that this company appears to be using DermaPet for its R&D.
TrizEDTA is the only USP only tris-edta product. TrizEDTA is used most often for bacterial (mainly Pseudomonas) infections of the middle ear. The middle ear contains many nerves and is connected directly to the inner ear and brain by little more than one or two thin, easily permeable membranes. The importance of using the purest of ingredients in a product to be used in this area can not be stressed enough. How one can compare a product containing non USP ingredients to a pure USP one is testimony to the power of a giant, publicly traded company's marketing. When it contains alcohol and Nonoxynol-12, as well, leads one to conclude that it was never intended for potential use in the middle ear.
Graduation, No More Tuition
Classmates DOT MILLER, RANDY FERTLEMES and VERN DURIE attended the reunion.
Also seen were former Dean ED ANDREWS, Associate Dean MARK STEWART and EPHRAIM
(ARNOLD) KEREN-KORNBLATT, editor of the IGERET, The Israeli Vet Assn Newsletter.
With maximum exhilaration and swelling pride, wearing a cap and gown, I presented Dr. JESSICA MELMAN her veterinary degree on May 19 in the Annenberg Auditorium. Also receiving degrees from other proud parents who joined me on stage in cap and gown were JEFFREY BELL by CHARLES N. Bell, Penn 1970, KEN BOLLENS III by KEN Bollens, Jr., Penn 1972, RYAN EPPLE by WILLIAM Epple, Penn 1969, SEAN OTT by CRAIG S. Ott, Penn 1972, KATE E. JOHNSON by FREDERICK W. Johnson, Cornell 1967, JAMES KIM by MOON S. Kim, Seoul, South Korea 1965, BRADFORD KUBE by TOM Kube, Cornell 1968.
This was Penn Veterinary Medicine's 118th Commencement Exercise. Of the 110 students in the Class of 2003, 79 are women (72%) and 31 are men (28%). Penn Veterinary Medicine has graduated 5,944 veterinarians, including the Class of 2003, 1,909 are women (32%) and 4,035 (68%) are men. Thank you JOSHUA LISS of Alumni Affairs this info.
Hokie Washington Area Dinner
FRANK PEARSALL led a Virginia Tech (VMRCVM)/ Hill's sponsored dinner at Morton's
for the Washington DC metropolitan area veterinarians on May 21. The Honorable
STEVE ROGERS (VA), who worked for my father, and I reminisced about working
together when we first graduated in the "inner city" part of the nation's
capital. Oncologist ROBERT ROSENTHAL, radiologist ROBERT TOAL, behaviorist MARSHA
REICH as well as many other local vets including newcomer SUSAN KATALA attended.
The irony of Jessica graduating from PENN instead of electing to go to VMRCVM
did not fail me when I commented that DermaPet could have run these dinners
quarterly for the tuition difference.
More On Fluoroquinolone Induced Pseudomonas Resistance
Last month, we provided the abstract from Gotthelf's study on the amplifying
cidal effect of TrizEDTA on strains of Pseudomonas resistant bacteria with and
without the use of fluoroquinolones. This abstract also is supportive to those
who argue that topical fluoroquinolone usage should be done at least in part
with systemic use and only in severe cases. Certainly, the use of a combination
fluoroquinolone combination product to treat Malassezia or non cytology and/or
C&S supported otology cases should be discouraged.
Development of Resistant Bacteria Isolated from Dogs with Otitis Externa or
Urinary Tract Infections after Exposure to Enrofloxacin In Vitro. Brothers and
WOOLEY. Vet Ther 3[4]:493-500.
Minimum inhibitory concentrations for enrofloxacin were determined for 63 bacterial
isolates from dogs with otitis externa or urinary tract infections. Development
of resistant mutants was determined after exposing the isolates to enrofloxacin
in vitro for up to five serial passages. Results indicated that Pseudomonas
aeruginosa and Enterococcus spp isolates exposed to enrofloxacin developed resistance
rapidly, whereas Klebsiella, Proteus, and Streptococcus spp were less likely
to develop resistance. Despite the presence of enrofloxacin pressure, no resistant
bacteria developed in the Escherichia coli and staphylococcal isolates. In many
isolates, susceptibility patterns changed from susceptible to intermediate.
More on Ototoxicity
The following abstract provides specific and objective information supportive
of the contention that ototoxicity is a real problem.
Effects of salicylates and aminoglycosides on spontaneous otoacoustic emissions in the Tokay gecko Stewart CE, Hudspeth AJ.Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 97[1]:454-9
The high sensitivity and sharp frequency discrimination of hearing depend on
mechanical amplification in the cochlea. To explore the basis of this active
process, we examined the pharmacological sensitivity of spontaneous otoacoustic
emissions (SOAEs) in a lizard, the Tokay gecko. In a quiet environment, each
ear produced a complex but stable pattern of emissions. These SOAEs were reversibly
modulated by drugs that affect mammalian otoacoustic emissions, the salicylates
and the aminoglycoside antibiotics. The effect of a single i.p. injection of
sodium salicylate depended on the initial power of the emissions: ears with
strong control SOAEs displayed suppression at all frequencies, whereas those
with weak control emissions showed enhancement. Repeated oral administration
of acetylsalicylic acid reduced all emissions. Single i.p. doses of gentamicin
or kanamycin suppressed SOAEs below 2.6 kHz, while modulating those above 2.6
kHz in either of two ways. For ears whose emission power at 2.6-5.2 kHz encompassed
more than half of the total, individual emissions displayed facilitation as
great as 35-fold. For the remaining ears, emissions dropped to as little as
one-sixth of their initial values. The similarity of the responses of reptilian
and mammalian cochleas to pharmacological intervention provides further evidence
for a common mechanism of cochlear amplification.
