Good Morning America

MARTY BECKER and JAN BELLOWS in a segment called Rin Tin Grin showed our DentAcetic products on Good Morning America on Thursday, August 13. The profession needs more positive PR like this especially after the Consumer Reports debacle.

SEBACEOUS ADENITIS

CLAUDIA NETT (former LSU derm resident, now in Switzerland) wrote about SA: We were using Omega 3 fatty acids at high dosages (180mg of EPA / kg BW) combined with palmolive/baby oil baths and had pretty good success with this treatment (in Akitas mainly). Once the seborrhea was controlled the intervals between bathing could be reduced in most dogs and most of them were controlled on a every other week bathing schedule. We kept them on the EFAs though. We reserved cyclosporine for severe cases. This information was presented at WCVD4 and in Vet Derm, Vol 11 by IRIS REICHLER who showed the benefit of omega 3 fatty acids in controlling SA.

The “Gemish” formulation has been tweaked. The “New TrizEDTA Gemish” formulation adds 600 mg (6 ml of Large Animal Baytril) to the 4 ounce TrizEDTA Aqueous bottle. If you wish to use 12 ml of the TrizEDTA then you can still add .6 ml of LA Baytril and 4-8 mg of Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate. To this smaller Gemish, some add 1-2 ml of medical grade DMSO.

Especially when treating OM, it is recommended to use a minimum of .5 ml to 2.0 ml of the Gemish twice daily. It still works best after cleaning with TrizEDTA. As written in previous newsletters, TrizEDTA works best at body temperature when it neutralizes the tissue eating enzymes secreted from Pseudomonas.

TrizEDTA is the only USP only tris-edta product. TrizEDTA is used most often for bacterial (mainly Pseudomonas) infections of the middle ear. The middle ear contains many nerves and is connected directly to the inner ear and brain by little more than one or two thin, easily permeable membranes. The importance of
using the purest of ingredients in a product to be used in this area cannot be stressed enough. How one can compare a product containing non USP ingredients
to a pure USP one is testimony to the power of a giant, publicly traded company's marketing. When it contains alcohol and Nonoxynol-12, as well, leads one to conclude that it was never intended for potential use in the middle ear.

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.

DermaPet acquired a big white GS named MAX, for balance, what with Rocksie (our new Yorky) being our new trade show hostess, a Bassett and St FP. A
previous white GS mascot Kingbud would be proud of his, for lack of a better word, replacement. Max’s nickname is “Bud Lite.”

AVMA, Denver

The meeting had excellent attendance. Interestingly, Snoop Doggy-Dog was staying at my hotel. I discovered this when their entourage disembarked from two large
vans that smelled like a burning toxic plant the fragrance of which is familiar to those of us who went to college in the 70’s. With the assurance of a few amicable 400 pound bodyguards, it was surprisingly quiet at the Hotel Teatro.

NICK SIMMS worked his first show for us alongside JACK, PATRICK RAYBURN and I. We were right across from Royal Canine and LAURA PETREE. Just down the aisle was IVD where STEVE JOSEPHS greeted all.

The behaviorists had their annual meeting. GARY LANDSBERG, Australian KERSTI SEKSEL and DEB HOROWITZ were seen dining and visited the booth as did ILANA REISNER and STEVE FELDMAN (now from S Cal). PETER EMILY picked CHARLIE RAHMER and I up and worked on us at his dental practice. BOB WIGGS and Peter presented the Dental lab. I told CAROL WELDON that I would ask if anyone knew if dogs from the south barked with an accent?

RALPH LEE was there which reminded me of when LOU GOTTHELF and I last played golf in Myrtle Beach. I’m not saying it’s a high crime area but 2 kids did run out on the golf course and stole our excellent drives. They were viewed by 2 shocked golfers and a marshall riding bikes from the scene.

Former co-workers, STEVE ROGERS and co-worker MICHELE KELLY (Falls Church, VA) stopped by as did LEE IZEN and his practice manager, KAREN COHEN (Roswell, GA).

We has a nice dinner with MEDRX’S “Big Country” KEITH POULIOT, BILL TOPLIFF and BYRON UPPERCUE.

Medrx, Austin, TX

MIKE MARK (Houston), BILL UPPERCUE and KEITH POULIOT joined LOU GOTTHELF and I for golf prior to the Sunday meeting. After 36 holes in 100 plus degree weather, LOU showed me a much improved game. But, he isn’t ready yet to claim bragging rights. Greater than 50 vets attended the Sunday seminar while PATRICK RAYBURN worked for DermaPet.

Congratulations to JENISE DAIGLE (Austin) on the birth of AVERY MADISON.

MedRx drew over 60 to the Newark seminar.
