Excerpt from JACK CHALLEM'S book, "THE INFLAMMATION SYNDROME"

Fish oil (EICOSADERM) is becoming more and more mainstream. The following excerpt from JACK CHALLEM'S book, "THE INFLAMMATION SYNDROME" should be useful reading.

The omega-3 family of fatty acids forms the building blocks of many of the body's natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Fish oil supplements, which are typically
produced from salmon oil, are especially rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic(DHA). Although both fatty acids are essential for health,
EPA plays a more important role in the body's defenses against inflammation.

The advantage of taking fish oil is simple: the body does not have to go though the many steps involved in converting alpha-linolenic acid(found in leafy green
vegetables and flaxseed) to EPA and DHA. By taking fish oil, you leapfrog these steps and the potential bottlenecks that interfere with the conversion and
rapidly convert EPA to inflammation-suppressing EICOSINOIDSs.

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis serve as excellent examples of how fish oils can benefit your health. Numerous studies have documented that diets
high in either fish or fish oils improve the balance of fatty acids in tissues, raising levels of anti-inflammatory and lowering amounts of pro-inflammatory substances.

More than two thousand studies on omega-3 fatty acids have been published in medical journals, adding up to wealth of persuasive data, and many studies have found that supplements and omega-3 rich food can significantly reduce levels of several inflammation-promoting compounds in people: thromboxane (B2), prostaglandin (E2), interleukin-1, and C-reactive protein. In a real sense, fish oils snuff out many of the matches of inflammation.

This anti-inflammatory effect of fish oils has been demonstrated over and over again. For example, in a Scottish study, researchers asked sixty four men and
women with rheumatoid arthritis to take daily fish oil or a placebo (dummy pill) daily. After three months many of the patients taking the fish oil capsules
benefited from reduced pain and were able to lower their intake of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's). By the end of the year-long study, 40
percent of the patients taking fish oil had been able to lower or eliminate NSAID's reducing their risk of drug-related side effects.

Fish oils actually help rebuild articular cartilage. Bruce Caterson, Ph.D., of Cardiff University, Wales, led a team of molecular biologists who discovered
specifically why fish oils reduce inflammation and inhibit the breakdown of cartilage, one of the characteristics of osteoarthritis. Caterson first determined that chondrocytes, one of the key types of cells forming cartilage, readily absorbed
alpha-linolenic acid (the parent omega-3 fatty acid) and displaced other fatty acids in the process. The same thing happened when he grew chondrocytes with EPA and DHA. But significantly, all of the omega-3 fatty acids deactivated "aggrecanases," a family of enzymes known to breakdown cartilage. The omega-3 fatty acids also stopped the genetic programming that increased levels of pro-inflammatory compounds, including interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), and cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2).

Computer viruses have wreaked havoc on personal computers and servers. Many people are noticing return mail saying the mail they sent contained a virus when, in fact, no mail was ever sent. Those people who are in a large number of address books like we are, find that when an address book is infected, the virus automatically sends out email to everyone on it. DermaPet, by virtue of sending out this newsletter to the industry is in almost everyone's address book, infected or not. The rule is, do not open ANY attachment from anyone you are not expecting one from. Even then question it. Be sure that DermaPet has NEVER yet sent an email with an attachment and has no plans to do so.

CVC, KC

MARTY BECKER told me that of all the dental products on Good Morning America, DIANE SAWYER took home the DentAcetic Wipes as the most practical for her pooch. LOWELL ACKERMAN came by for several nice chats. PETER EMILY also looked in on his patient. My Atkins mentor, RON WHITFORD, despite keeping his weight down is having back problems. HOWIE LEE couldn't make it out Sat nite so he could watch NASCAR! CAROL WELDIN is still confused...about whether dogs have regional accents. BILL FLING has moved back to Columbus and co- Banfield vet and Westie breeder BOB McCASKILL enjoyed some time together. Sunday night, it seemed like 98% of the Majestic Steak and Jazz house was filled with the industry while DAN BROSSLER celebrated another birthday. JEFF WERBER is supposed to take good care of daughter Stacey's Shitzu, Chloe.

Natural Products Expo, DC

This is a well attended show mainly for retailers who visit exhibitors who market to the public. After visiting the pet product manufacturers, and seeing what was new in nutraceuticals, I loaded up on low carb treats for my Atkins diet. (Thank you RON WHITFORD.) Bark Bars, Natural Life, Doctor Harverys, Greenies, Lick Your Chops, Blond with Beagle and Precise Dog foods were but a few of the companies there. JACK CHALLEM'S signed a book for me, telling me how he loved fish oil and agreed to let me excerpt his book.

Updates

The "Gemish" formulation has been tweaked. The "New TrizEDTA Gemish" formulation adds 600 mg (6 ml of Large Animal Baytril) to the 4 ounce TrizEDTA Aqueous bottle. If you wish to use 12 ml of the TrizEDTA then you can still add .6 ml of LA Baytril and 4-8 mg of Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate. To this smaller Gemish, some add 1-2 ml of medical grade DMSO.

Especially when treating OM, it is recommended to use a minimum of .5 ml to 2.0 ml of the Gemish twice daily. It still works best after cleaning with TrizEDTA. As written in previous newsletters, TrizEDTA works best at body temperature when it neutralizes the tissue eating enzymes secreted from Pseudomonas.

TrizEDTA is the only USP only tris-edta product. TrizEDTA is used most often for bacterial (mainly Pseudomonas) infections of the middle ear. The middle ear contains many nerves and is connected directly to the inner ear and brain by little more than one or two thin, easily permeable membranes. The importance of using the purest of ingredients in a product to be used in this area cannot be stressed enough. How one can compare a product containing non USP ingredients to a pure USP one is testimony to the power of a giant, publicly traded company's marketing. When it contains alcohol and Nonoxynol-12, as well, leads one to conclude that it was never intended for potential use in the middle ear.

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.
