New Concepts In Ear Cleaning TrizEDTA (EDTA tris)

Sue Paterson MA VetMB DVD DipECVD MRCVS (for the entire article including color charts see our web site)

Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid tris (EDTA tris) is unique amongst the ear cleaning products currently available to veterinary surgeons. (It) has been found to possess a whole range of novel properties that can be harnessed in the topical management of bacterial otitis. Much of the work on the action of EDTA-tris was undertaken 20 – 30 years ago but it’s true potential in Veterinary medicine has only recently been established. Recent work particularly by Gotthelf has reinforced the action of this compound.

The potentiating effects of EDTA-tris in otitis have been described in a whole range of veterinary articles dating back as far as 1974 when Blue, Wooley and Eagon described the treatment of an experimentally induced PSEUDOMONAS aeruginosa otitis externa by lavage with EDTA tromethamine lysozyme. Since this earliest article many other workers have looked at EDTA-tris in a whole range of clinical applications. Its use as an adjunct LAVAGE for multiple fistulas in a dog was described by Bjorling and colleagues (1982), as well as its use in combination with antibiotics to treat CYSTITIS (Wooley, 1974,1975, Farca, 1997) and RHINITIS (Wooley, 1979). More recently its use in OTITIS externa has been described by several authors (Sparks, 1994, Farca, 1997, Foster, 1998).

EDTA- tris has three principal functions in ear management
1) As an antibacterial flush
2) As an alkalinising solution
3) As an antibiotic potentiating agent

Center Finds Strokes In Small Animals More Common

The Iams Pet Imaging Center has determined that strokes (brain infarctions) are more common in small animals than previously believed. Since opening in the spring of 2002, the Iams Pet Imaging Center has provided diagnostic information for more than 1,600 pets, about a fourth of which suffered neurological disorders of the brain. Out of those brain cases, it was determined 10% of dogs scanned experienced a stroke, which were generally believed not to occur in dogs. A lower percentage of cats have been diagnosed as having a stroke.

Surgery Meeting, Washington, DC, Great Smokie’s in Ashville and Wild West in Reno

HANS KOCH was a surprise visitor to DC with JEAN FRANCOIS SALOMON (France). This meeting occurred during the Great Smokies and Wild West Meeting in Reno. While PHIL BRUCE worked the former, JOYCE HEFLIN worked Reno and CHUCK MICHAELS and I hung out at the MedRx booth with Glen Taylor during the Surgery meeting. Conspicuously absent was JACK WHITE whose attendance was required while his daughter, BRITTNEY, won Homecoming Queen for her high school. There was a must see photo of the proud papa in a black cowboy hat, boots and a tux.

ACVC, Atlantic City

JACK, CHUCK and I worked the booth and welcomed COLIN FERGUSON. Of course, we ate a legendary White House Sub. JIM DOONAN’s (Andover) wife was happy about being near slot machines. IRWIN STROMEYER (C-MED), KEVIN GOUVIN (Summit Hill) and CHRIS SCOTT were notables that worked the Surgery and ACVC back-to-back. BRIAN COLLINS (husband to AVS sales rep, KELLY) and I enjoyed watching playoff baseball and Monday night football. SUE KATALA (VA) visited from her new home in Virginia. JULIA LANE and KRISTIN BURTON (PENN ’03) from Jessica’s class stopped by as did BOB ZERBE (PENN ’73) from my class.

WSAVA, Bangkok

We were met after the long flight by our friend and distributor, KAROON CHAIWONGROJ of CENTRAL PET PRODUCTS. We set up in the morning and went to the opening ceremony the same night. The NAVC (North American Vet Conference aka the “Orlando meeting”) was represented by COLIN BURROWS, PHILLIPE MOREAU and RALPH BARRETT. JOHN PINKERMAN and wife, Roni, from Suburban Cages were there. PETER IHRKE represented the ACVD along with DIDIER CARLOTTI while STEPHEN WHITE did the lion’s share of derm lectures.

We also ran into URS GIGER (PENN) and GREG OGILVIE (CSU soon to be in San Diego). Former NLS transplant, TOM BIRSINGER is living there now. We hear the Royal Family of Kathmandu uses DermaPet products.

One evening, Karoon took us to Yok-Yor, a seafood restaurant on the river, where we ordered our meal from tanks of live fish, shrimp and crabs. Gloria expressed interest in the live entertainment prompting Karoon to add “You like the song while I like the singer.” WSAVA Thailand was very organized. Thailand was very service oriented, affordable, with excellent hotels, bars, entertainment, shopping and food to please everyone.

George Muller Derm, Kauai

This is a meeting where real friendships are made and nurtured by repeat visits. RALPH MULLER and SONYA BETTENAY greeted us as they have in many foreign destinations the last year. Sonya is fretting their move to the University of MUNICH where they will be moving (from CSU) effective January 2004. PETER IHRKE and DON KLINGBORG again hosted the event. Prior to his lecture to the practice owners and non-veterinary spouses (making the event kosher to deduct for all), Don, who lost his trademark cowbell, was overheard correcting someone who thought he might just be lecturing to women.

There were many male spouses including golf mate JEFF JOHNSON (LAURIE, OR). Jeff joined DAVE HANCOCK (Rochester, NY) and ED MAHER in my foursome for the Virbac/IVD golf tournament where WILL VALENTINE greeted me. MOORE BACHARACH (WA) won again while Dave Hancock beat me in a personal match, tasting sweet revenge from a previous defeat 2 years ago.

DAVE JACOBS (Falls Church, VA), who is the reason STEVE ROGERS is such a success, celebrated his 25th Wedding anniversary with LYNNE DREYER; he almost seemed to forgive me for when we worked together in D.C. after graduation in the wild 70’s. PAUL and SANDRA CECHNER (Los Alamitos, CA) celebrated their 40th Wedding anniversary.

DOUG and COLLEEN KUNZ (Palm Springs, CA) told us they were planning a wedding on 11/21 for their daughter. DOUG COWARD surfed despite the international story about the 13 year old female surfing champion having her arm bitten off by a shark. I might add that GLORIA never went in the ocean after that. DAVID HAAS (LIHUE), a 2ND generation Hawaiian vet from Kauai, brought her a beautiful Terebra dimidiata shell.

Dental Show, San Diego

This show survived the SC fires. JACK WHITE worked it with JOYCE HEFLIN. GARY GOLDSTEIN (MINN), JAN BELLOWS (FL), PETER EMILY and BOB WIGGS were a few friends who stopped by to say hello.

OKLAHOMA VMA

PATRICK RAYBURN worked this show where he heard an earful about the Sooners #1 football team. He left it on Saturday to fly to New Orleans for the Medrx show.
We are pleased to announce Patent # US 6,610,276 B2 Multi-functional Dental Composition which protects our DentAcetic line. Look for many innovative dental products in the near future.

***Western States (LAS VEGAS, February 17-19, 2004). Rooms at the Mandalay Bay for the Special $99 Prepaid rate are no longer available. STEVEN CRANE wants everyone to book the convention rate at the Luxor for $99 or the Excalibre for $79.

MALACETIC OTIC And The EAR/SKIN CLEANSER Are The Same

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.
