VOLUME is very important in ear treatments. For the treatment of bacterial
otitis, while previous newsletters addressed the tweaking of the
Gemish (as described in 7 Steps to Ear Therapy,
at dermapet.com), it is important to emphasize that .5-2 ml of Gemish/liquid
should be applied TWO times daily in each affected ear. This pretty much eliminates
any commercial products, which generally come in 7.5 to 15 ml (large) sizes.
When treating Pseudomonas or other bad microbes, the current recommendation
is to add 6 ml (600 mg) of Baytril LA (Large Animal injectable) or Marbofloxin
100 mg/ml, if you are in a place where you can get it. If systemic corticosteroids
are not used then for the first 2 weeks, take out 24 ml aliquots and add 8 mg
of Sodium Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate (DSP). Then clean the ear twice daily
with TrizEDTA and treat with the DSP Gemish. The volume is required
to reach the large affected surface area in the external horizontal canal and
the tympanic bulla in the middle ear.
The importance for large doses of systemic antibiotics on a long term basis
has been downplayed to only 21 days (by yours truly); others suggest using even
less systemic antibiotics. Topical treatment, on the other hand, could last
for months.
Tax Shelter
If you are from the US, have not already bought a Sports Utility Vehicle and
you have business income then now is the time. They are 100% deductible as long
as they are at least 6000 pounds and you spend less than $100,000 per year on
equipment.

Led by BILL TOPLIFF and attended by Can-you-hear-me-now JOYCE HEFLIN,
our hard working TM, forty-eight vets showed up from as far away as Ohio to
hear LOU GOTTHELF. While Lou, Bill and I played golf at a beautiful course,
we were unable to get a tee time at legendary Torrey Pines where BRUCE LINDSAY(SD)
thinks the starter to be more influential than the mayor.
CD For Cats
Animal psychologists from Vienna's University of Veterinary Medicine have developed a CD of music composed especially for cats. The researchers noted that aggression levels dropped and the cats would sit by the loudspeakers when the music was played. In Austria, the CD's are available exclusively from veterinarians.
"Fulfillment" is the new buzzword among trendy California dog
lovers
"Fulfillment" is the new buzzword among trendy California dog lovers,
according to the Los Angeles Times. The idea is to figure out what a dog was
born to do - herd, hunt, retrieve, sit decoratively on laps - and find ways
to do it. Some enterprising California farmers have capitalized on the trend.
For instance, some provide (for a fee, of course) a field stocked with sheep
where a dog owner can let his mutt actually "embrace their destiny"
by herding sheep. Many dog owners enroll their pets in recreational and sporting
associations, sometimes organized by activity (obedience, therapy, search and
rescue) and other times by breed. Dogs have play dates or walking dates. Dog
day-care centers cater to those guilt-ridden owners who find it necessary to
go to work.
