Fatty Acid M of A

The use of supplements for treating pruritic inflammatory diseases and crusting diseases in dogs and cats has been the subject of multiple open and controlled studies. In general, this method has shown success for the management of pruritus and inflammation associated with a variety of diseases, though predominantly allergic.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which is usually supplied by using cold water marine fish oils, competes as a substrate for cyclooxygenase and 5- and 15-lipoxygenase. The metabolism of EPA by the lipoxygenase enzymes results in the formation of leukotriene B5 and 15-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid. The two products are thought to inhibit leukotriene B4, which is a potent pro-inflammatory mediator. Consumption of a diet enriched in N-3 (omega-3) fatty acids reduced delayed-type hypersensitivity responses, decreases production of prostaglandin E2, and resulted in increased postvaccinal total lymphocyte count in aged Beagle dogs. An omega-3 fatty acid-enriched diet had no long-term negative effect on wound healing in dogs. (Muller & Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology 6th Ed. p. 239)

Ed note: The correct dose of 180 mg EPA per 10 pounds remains. That dose is in each ml of EicosaDerm, an ethical product, which is currently the least expensive method for supplementing fish oil. Remember: not all fish oil has the proper amount of EPA; other omega 3 sources like flax seed do not contain enough EPA to be effective.

Yada, Yada, Yada

There were close to 6,000 vets in Orlando and many more techs and paraprofessionals, yet, the meeting did not seem crowded. At night, where the Gaylord seemed to lack a central meeting place, people wandered aimlessly to suites and ample entertainment, although the days were vibrant. Speaking of entertainment, an 'amateur' band including DON HARRIS, CHRIS PERRY (MEDRX), STAN GELBAUGH (virbac) and KEVIN VASQUEZ (Butler) did a great job opening for CHICAGO. A comedian got a loud ovation when he wondered how authorities from CDC found the cause of monkey pox so easily, tracked to a specific Namibian Rat in one midwest pet store, when the entire US government can't find Osama Bin Ladin. (I hope it is not too political to say) others suggested using the CDC to assist in the search for the weapons of mass destruction.

JIM McNAIR (Bayer CFO) played in my 4some in the golf tournament. If Jim finds money as well as he located my errant golf balls then Bayer has the right man. I wouldn't have had the pleasure to play with Jim if it weren't for a late showing from DAN and CHRIS SCOTT and KENNY KEITH. Our old friends ANGIE and MARLENE ROMANI of CLIPPER-VAC were exhibiting. They arranged for us to get our Dixie, a white standard Poodle. CHARLOTTE LITTLE(Port Washington, WI) told us how Midwest Air returned her valued cat toys after she forgot them in the luggage compartment. We do tell people they travel well.

JACK WHITE, COLIN FERGUSON, CHUCK MICHAELS, GLORIA and I worked the booth. In a John Madden "I hate to fly" motif, CHUCK drove from DC to Orlando in his new "Chuckwagon." We saw PETER IHRKE, WAYNE ROSENKRANTZ, LOWELL ACKERMAN, GARY LANDSBERG, PETER EMILY and BOB WIGGS, just to name a few speakers who stopped by. Of course, LOU GOTTHELF and the Medrx gang were there. Although the best party was in the Medrx suite, VLS, whose suite shared a common wall with our room, seemed to be having a good time. I want to thank DONNA GINTY of the NAVC for placing TVs in the trade show hall where we could watch football. I was surprised to see COLIN BURROWS interested in our American version which he said he gathered from his days in Philadelphia when he taught yours truly.

PHIL COHEN of . PetCARE Television Network, Inc (www.petcaretv.com) , the fast growing reception based client education network that wants to be in your reception area, was there. He tells us that now is the time to get a FREE DVD PLAYER and TV in your clinic. JEFF WERBER is the host in a clinic, news oriented, client informational show available right in your waiting room.

There was unusually high interest on the pet frequent flyer vignette from last month's newsletter with many asking what breed Roxie is and why she is afraid of a tattoo. The truth is, being a Yorkie, she is not afraid of anything, but, being a lady, she did not want to place any permanent marks on her body. And to be PC, she noted that many tattoos look great and enhance beauty. Though she doesn't mind sitting under the seat, she would like to have a frequent flyer card. STEVE JOSEPH (IVD) thought that with the challenges presented by BSE and other zoonotics, we may be approaching a day when all animals will require IDs.

EICOSADERM is now available in a 32 ounce economy size. Buy 3 get 1 FREE for the Introductory Special (net $18.99/ less than $0.02/10 lb dose). This will afford 960 doses for a 10 pound dog (or 96 for the 100 pound beast), making this much more affordable than the "one major supplier of omega 3 liquid" and generic caps.

Excerpt from Geriatric Otology/ Protocol for Otitis Media

"GERIATRICS & GERONTOLOGY" of the Dog and Cat, 2nd Ed., JOHNNY HOSKINS, published by Elsevier, just came including my chapter "Ear Diseases and Altered Hearing."
The following is an excerpt from Geriatric Otology/ Protocol for Otitis Media.

1. Systemic antibiotics such as Baytril or Marbofloxin for 21 days. This has been reduced in importance to emphasize topical therapy.
2. Clean with TrizEDTA twice daily
3. Approximately 15 minutes after each cleaning, instill Baytril in either a TrizEDTA gemish (12 ml of TrizEDTA and 50-200 mg of Baytril injectable) or diluted with saline . Some people use aminoglycosides even though they are ototoxic.
Ed note: since writing the chapter, I prefer to combine 2 and 3 by adding 6 ml of LA Baytril (600 mg) to a 4 ounce bottle of TrizEDTA and instilling .5-2ml/bid/each ear.
4. For the first 14 days, I would use systemic prednisone at 1-2 mg/kg if OM is diagnosed. The rationale is to decrease the inflammation and mucous secretion from the mucoperiosteum, pain and viscosity of the exudate in the tympanic cavity.
5. If OM is diagnosed, I would anesthetize and, with visualization, flush the ear with TrizEDTA and directly instill Baytril and NaDex phosphate into the tympanic bulla. If the tympanum is present and OM is suspected then I would do a myringotomy. The location of the myringotomy should be ventral. Maintenance therapy would include biweekly TrizEDTA cleansing longterm.

MALACETIC OTIC And The EAR/SKIN CLEANSER Are The Same

MALACETIC OTIC and the EAR/SKIN CLEANSER are one and the same. We have just started using the trade name MalAcetic Otic since we are consolidating the shampoo, conditioner, ear/skin and wet wipes under one registered mark. Except for the label change, the product is otherwise the same.
