Papers From The British Veterinary Dermatology Study Group

I attended the British Veterinary Dermatology Study Group in Birmingham, England, from which selected papers are posted at our web site under ear articles. I will report selected excerpts and comments.

CELIA COX, who is a fellow member of the INTERNATIONAL VETERINARY EAR, NOSE and THROAT ASSOCIATION (IVENTA) presented "Hearing Assessment in Dogs and Cats." The incidence, significance, anatomy and physiology and mechanism were discussed.

"The level of Loudness is expressed in decibels using a logarithmic scale. The higher the number, the louder the sound. A 10 fold increase is called a bel and hence 1/10 is called a decibel (db). A sound equivalence of 50-60 dBnHL is equivalent to someone talking loudly. Frequency refers to the rate of vibration of air particles which constitute the sound. It is measured in Hz, equal to one cycle per second. The higher the number, the higher the pitch. A normal hearing adult human can hear from 20 Hz to 20kHz. A normal hearing dog can hear up to 67kHz. "

The same tests can be used in man and dogs. She went on to define the basics of hearing and differentiate between air and bone conduction. A common misconception is that dogs cannot hear after TECA which Cox explained occurs via bone conduction and/or at 65dBnHL or above. Ototoxicity was briefly discussed. Celia was PC for the record, commenting any product containing chlorhexidine should not be used, but, in private mentioned our #1 ear cleansing competitor has a major problem. The standard foaming, alcohol and DSS containing cleansers were also described as a problem.

Good friend, SUE PATERSON, presented an article "The Use of Ear Wicks in the Therapy of Otitis Externa" on the use of ear wicks where she planted them saturated with antibiotic and TrizEDTA in ears. She was quite successful adding that this was most effective in difficult to treat pets.

DAVID LLOYD presented a paper called the "Development of Antibiotic Resistance Amongst Pseudomonas Isolates From Veterinary Clinical Specimenst" where he talked about how easily Pseudomonas adapts to antibiotics and warned to be more prudent in giving systemic antibiotics. He agrees with the current recommendations of otitis treatment stressing topical therapy as it should not induce resistance as quickly. This paper has many useful references.

The paper by ROSS BOND on Nomenclature of Fungal Diseases is also posted on the web site.

JACK WHITE introduced our new SE TM, JAY MAIDEN, who took to the business of DermaPet like the seasoned pro he is. Another veteran, RAY KERSEY also changed hats and is now representing an old competitor, Blackwell. BARRY MITZNER (SE VET LABS) showed me the new pen-light/laser/wood's lamp he is marketing. COLIN BURROWS told me he sent TNAVC #1 DONNA GINDY to represent him at the BSAVA. To the amusement of JAY and JACK, old co-worker, vice-mayor STEVE ROGERS shared some funny experiences of when we worked together in DC. BO EDWARDS (Youngstown, OH) told us stories of MICKEY WILLEN (Canton and Palm Desert).

I also met with PHIL COHEN, of . PetCARE Television Network, Inc PTNW , the fast growing reception based client education network that wants to be in your reception area. Now is the time to join the 3,000 veterinary subscribers to this educational / marketing monthly video magazine. Phil hosted a social evening over dinner in Tampa, PTNW home base, attended by RANDY CARSCH, KATY JOHNSON, CHANDRA RUSK, MELODY JURGENS, KIM SARUBBI and BERNIE KOUMA.

JIMMY NOXON (ISU) did the derm where he described what is known as "NOXON's FOLD" which he defines as the cartilaginous fold that comes down from the dorsal aspect of the auricular cartilage right at the bifurcation of the vertical and horizontal ear canal. It is here where the head of the videootoscope often gets temporarily stuck and where I propose the wicks described by SUE PATERSON, be placed. SANDY MERCHANT also lectured on ears.

BSAVA and BVDSG, Birmingham, England

For those contemplating a trip to Europe, be advised that the dollar is trading so low that consideration should be to postpone any plans to visit. As a guide for everyday expenses, think of what you would consider expensive in the US and then double it.

DONNA GINDY "TNAVC #1" and associate SHANNON CLYATT greeted us at check in. JOHN PINKERMAN (Suburban cages) took us for an Indian meal that "cured" me. Trooper LUCY ACKERMAN (ACVIM) fell and received a black eye and a nasty laceration on her forehead and still was one of the first to show up in the trade show hall (and last to leave) to work. JAMES and JAYNE CREED (WVC), GARY STAMP (EC&CCS) and GARY CUSHING (PRN) were some of the Americans attending or exhibiting. BEN ALBALAS was promoting the WSAVA in GREECE this fall. BO BRONSERUD (Vet Plus) remembered me from Thailand from where we still have not received our booth back The BVDSG was attended by many of the world's derm elite including CRAIG HARRISON, TIM NUTTAL and EWAN FERGUSON. I received directions to the exhibits from ED HALL, BSAVA Executive Director. SUE PATERSON prepared an informative, colorful ear chart which she gives to the growing number of DermaPet customers in the UK.

RICHARD HALLIWELL, President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (the equivalent of our examining boards and the AVMA combined) relayed the latest news in the derm world to us over a nice lunch and an excellent bottle of wine (98 Monbousquet). I promised to bring an excellent bottle (from California) to share in Vienna this summer at the WCVD.

SUE PATERSON and orthopedic surgeon DUNCAN MIDEGELY (RUTLAND HOUSE) ran the DermaPet booth. Duncan advised me of a successful case where he treated a septic joint with infusions of TrizEDTA.
