MalAcetic Effective Against Malassezia
DermaPet will NEVER send an attachment. Although we are relatively
sure we are not infected right now, realistic experience tells us to err on
the side of caution, so do not open an email from dermapet@aol.com

MalAcetic Effective Against Malassezia
Seven years ago. Gotthelf and Young published a multicenter study showing our "patented" MALACETIC OTIC was 87% effective in treating Malassezia otitis. Bassett et al have just published the following study in Australia, which we proudly noticed was featured on VIN's Front Page, validating that study by finding the product to be 88% successful in treating Malassezia otitis cases. It bears emphasizing that in neither study were underlying diseases considered. The full text of the article is at our web site.
Efficacy of an Acetic Acid/Boric Acid Ear Cleaning Solution for Treatment and
Prophylaxis of Malassezia sp. Otitis Externa
Aust Vet Pract 34[2]:79-82 Jun'04 Clinical Pilot Study 12 Refs

Animal Skin and Allergy Service, Melbourne Veterinary Referral Centre, 70 Blackburn
Rd, Glen Waverley, Vic 3150; and * Statistical Consulting Centre, University
of Melbourne, Parkville, Vic 3052
A pilot study with 2% acetic acid and 2% boric acid ear cleaning solution was
performed to assess its efficacy for treatment and prophylaxis of canine Malassezia
sp. otitis externa. Eighteen dogs were included in the treatment group and eight
dogs with a history of recurrent Malassezia sp. otitis, were included in the
prophylaxis group (to assess if the ear cleaning solution would prevent recurrence
of Malassezia sp. otitis externa). Otitis externa resolved in 88% (16 of 18
cases). The 2% acetic acid and 2% boric acid ear cleaning solution was an effective
therapy for Malassezia sp. otitis but was not uniformly successful in preventing
relapse of Malassezia sp. otitis in this group.
The FDA announced that scientific evidence indicates that long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids containing both EPA and DHA may be beneficial in reducing coronary heart disease.
Food companies may begin using the FDA's new health claim immediately. The
full text of the FDA release can be viewed at http://www.fda.gov . "Coronary
heart disease is a significant health problem that causes 500,000 deaths annually
in the United States," said Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Acting FDA Commissioner.
"This new qualified health claim for Omega-3 fatty acids should help consumers
as they work to improve their health by identifying foods that contain these
important compounds."
"Consumers should look for both EPA and DHA content on food packages. DHA-only
products are missing EPA, a fatty acid vital to good heart health" "Also,
it is important that the FDA emphasized long-chain -- not short-chain -- Omega-3s,".
"Long-chain Omega-3s are more beneficial than short-chain sources of Omega-3s
such as flax, canola, soy and walnuts, because the body absorbs the protective
benefits of long-chain Omega-3s more quickly and efficiently."
For those who follow this newsletter, it is late this month because we were
at trade shows consecutively from 9/28 to 10/17, as the gossip will show.
Banfield Annual Meeting, Portland
JACK and I attended. We were surprised to run into RICHARD and JENNY HALLIWELL,
sitting with DEAN A J TREES (Liverpool). Richard talked about the globalization
of veterinary medicine.
Dental Annual Meeting, Fort Worth
BERT DODD, PETER EMILY, ED EISNER, BOB WIGGS and the rest of the world's dentists
were in attendance. GARY GOLDSTEIN and I talked about getting our octogenarian
mom's together again. I was told that DON ROSS was there by his partner and
my Dad's classmate, MIKE MARK. Mike took me to one of those narrow, wooded,
water laden golf courses where, if you were smart, you left your driver in the
bag. I did the right thing by letting him win on the last hole since he drove
4 1/2 hours from Houston just to play golf with me.
Wild West, Reno
JOYCE HEFLIN worked the booth by herself. BOB WIGGS lectured again. GARY LANDSBERG wondered why I did not attend. My plane to Reno canceled, after boarding.
Atlantic Coast Conference, Atlantic City
BOB WIGGS AGAIN was on the program causing some exhibitors to wonder if he
was one of us. Bob, BERT DODD, SCOTT LINEK and I shared a legendary White House
hoagie. RON WHITFORD prepared an excellent program with nationally known speakers
at this well attended conference. This is the last large, regional meeting for
those who need CE. So large that "PROJECTILE," the band that Hootie
and the Blowfish closed for, entertained us at the Bayer pasta party. SALLY
HADDOCK was honored with an excellent rendition of "Lay Down Sally."
BOB GORDON, a member of the Board of Directors for the meeting was seen on the
dance floor as was LORRAINE ELWOOD. Despite prodding by wife LINDA, STEVE JOSEPH
did not dance this time. Lead guitar, CHRIS PERRY (MedRx) excelled in an Eric
Clapton song along with KEVIN VASQUEZ and DON HARRIS and the rest of the band.
Projectile will also be at TNAVC, AVMA and the Butler regional meeting.
Jessica's classmate, LISA HARWOOD (PENN 2003) came by as did my classmate, BOB
ZERBE (PENN 73). JACK WHITE and CHUCK MICHAELS manned the booth. LOU GOTTHELF
spoke to standing room only crowds and, more importantly, hit 13 on the roulette
table after being told he was lecturing on the 13th floor on the 13th.
The next edition of Lou's book Small
Animal Ear Diseases, 2nd Edition will be out in November.
Natural Products, Washington DC
Ideas are borne at this show. So is indigestion. Gloria, CHRIS von STEIN and
I attended this show where foods of all sorts were sampled. This was Halloween
without the costumes for adults; we made several trips to the car with samples
of the latest low carb foods, chips, sauces and candies. There were also the
notable fish oil providers offering salmon oil with as little as 90 mg of EPA/ml
and cod liver oil as if it contained 180 mg/ml of EPA. Scattered in were pet
product manufacturers and others hawking ginseng, chondroitin, glucosamine and
every natural product for whatever ails you.
