Fatty Acids Are Back In The News
Fatty acids are back in the news. The following article demonstrates the steroid sparing effects of using them. Both EicosaDerm and OFA Caps Plus EZ-C with garlic will reduce the quantity and duration of corticosteroid use in atopy and other diseases where corticosteroids are indicated.
A Randomized Controlled Study to Evaluate the Steroid Sparing Effect of Essential Fatty Acid Supplementation in the Treatment of Canine Atopic Dermatitis Vet Dermatol 15[3]:137-145 Jun'04 Bente K. Saevik, Kerstin Bergvall, Birgit R. Holm et al.
Last months subject was how our MalAcetic Otic had a repeat study that demonstrated efficacy against Malassezia. This essentially duplicated the results of Gotthelf and Young in 1997. MalAcetic also comes in a Shampoo, Wet Wipe and Leave-on Dry-on Conditioner.
Efficacy of an Acetic Acid/Boric Acid Ear Cleaning Solution for Treatment and Prophylaxis of Malassezia sp. Otitis Externa Aust Vet Pract 34[2]:79-82 Jun'04 Clinical Pilot Study 12 Refs. Bassett et al.A pilot study with 2% acetic acid and 2% boric acid ear cleaning solution was performed to assess its efficacy for treatment and prophylaxis of canine Malassezia sp. otitis externa. Eighteen dogs were included in the treatment group and eight dogs with a history of recurrent Malassezia sp. otitis, were included in the prophylaxis group (to assess if the ear cleaning solution would prevent recurrence of Malassezia sp. otitis externa). Otitis externa resolved in 88% (16 of 18 cases). For full text go to http://www.dermapet.com/articles/efficacy.pdf.
Maui, 20th Annual George Muller meeting
It all started with the golf tournament where I teamed with WILL VALENTINE,
DOUG HUBERT (Virbac) and STEVE BATTY (IVD). The first nine went along fine.
Then the entertaining Will and Doug, seemingly immune to "Hawaiin Punch",
tried to poison me with it so they could win our personal team match on the
last hole. Actually, I don't recall ever seeing them without a MillerLite in
their hands except during the early morning trade show hours. YT also managed
to suffer from food poisoning and called in daughter, STACEY, from LA to help
work the booth. Stacey attracted all sorts of attention including PAULIE SHORE.
Paulie, who knows Stacey from LaLa, told us his new movie, Paulie Shore is Dead,
is coming out in January.
SABRA LUCAS (OH) won the trip from Pfizer for a case report she wrote. Sabra
told us she used TrizEDTA and MalAcetic on the case, but, it didn't appear in
the Pfizer handout. Oh, well. In the small world category, JODY HOLCOMB (MD)
is friends with vet CRYSTAL, wife of my tech for the last 20 years, RON BROBST.
In the thanks for constructive criticism category, credit for our new DENTEES
packaging idea goes to ERIC WESTHEIMER, whose dogs love DENTEES. Several repeat
attendees were there including DOUG COWARD, RICH FARRIS (OR), JAY LONGBACH,
DICK MCCARTHY (MA), AL SEARS, classmate EDDIE MOLESWORTH (MD) and MARV JOHNSON
(IA) to name a few. Newcomer ELAINE SALINGER really is related to the famous
author. KEVIN DOUGHTY (NV), a fellow wine collector, invited me to his home
to share a special bottle of wine.
PETER IHRKE and JOHN KLINGBORG hosted the event. STEPHEN WHITE and CATHERINE
OUTERBRIDGE attended leaving a skeleton staff back home at UC/Davis.
