TrizEDTA Reclarified

The efficacy and stability of TrizEDTA needs to be reclarified. In the study by LOU GOTTHELF and GBADAMOSI (see text below) that was presented at an ACVD/AAVD meeting, Aqueous TrizEDTA needed to be diluted 8x to allow PSEUDOMONAS, previously cultured as resistant to fluoroquinolones, to just grow. Keep in mind that there may be misinformation generated, possibly from a competitor with a potentially ototoxic product containing detergents, alcohol and no USP ingredients. Original work on tris-edta by Wooley et al was using an aqueous product, without further preservative, which has remarkable stability; TrizEDTA has 3 year label dating.

Evaluation of the IN VITRO Effect of TrizEDTA on the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Enrofloxacin Against Ciprofloxacin Resistant PSEUDOMONAS Aeruginosa. GOTTHELF L and Gbadamosi S (AAVD presentation)

This study examined the in vitro effect of TrizEDTA on the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of enrofloxacin (ENRO) against 12 strains of ciprofloxacin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bacterial strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin (MIC>2 µg/ml, and 5 µg/ml disks). Minimally passaged cultures of the bacterial strains were grown on nutrient agar, and suspended in 50 mM tris hydrochloride solution at a concentration equivalent to 0.5 McFarland turbidity standard, optical density(OD) range of 0.08 to 0.10 according to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS) recommendation. To determine the endpoint MIC, the bacterial suspensions were incubated at 37º C for 30 minutes, and were then transferred into wells of microtiter plates containing two-fold dilutions of ENRO in Mueller-Hinton broth. Following overnight incubation at 37º C, wells were examined to determine the endpoint MIC of ENRO against each bacterial strain. Bacterial cultures were
resistant to ENRO at endpoint MICs ranging from 227 µg/ml to 7.09 µg/ml The same protocol was repeated after TrizEDTA exposure for 5 minutes at 37º C. Susceptibility to ENRO MIC decreased to lower than 1.7 µg/ml for all strains. These observations were further evaluated using 10X bacterial concentrations with similar results. These findings suggest that TrizEDTA exhibits a sparing in vitro effect on the MIC of enrofloxacin against ciprofloxacin resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and may benefit treatment of otitis externa infections with both susceptible and resistant Pseudomonas bacteria.

And, otic products are the #1 reason pet-owners re-visit the vet clinic and/or visit for an OTC product (Vet Economics).

K-9 Influenza Strikes NYC

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell has reason to believe that canine influenza virus is now present in the New York City area. Reports have been received indicating an unusual form of "kennel cough" has been seen in a number of veterinary practices. Six animals recovering from this clinical presentation are all serologically positive for canine influenza virus. Previous tests of New York State dogs have all been negative.

Canine influenza virus is a relatively new finding in dogs. It was first identified in racing greyhounds and this virus appears to have been the cause of significant respiratory problems on the tracks throughout the US for the last 5-6 years. The Virology Lab at Cornell isolated the first influenza virus from an animal that died from the infection. The virus was sequenced at CDC and was found to be closely related to equine influenza virus. Evidence of infection of non-greyhounds by influenza virus has been found in Florida for the past year.

Yada, Yada, Yada

BRUCE PETERSON, principal at Columbus Serum, accepted an open invitation and visited for a Washington Nats-San Francisco Giants baseball game. We were treated to terrific weather and a home team victory while talking as little about business as conceivable. Other distributors should please feel personally welcome to visit DermaPet anytime, especially around a sporting event. Just call JACK or the corporate office.

TVMA, Ft Worth

Considering the washout from hurricane Rita and the evacuation of so much of SE Texas, the meeting went well. JACK WHITE and PATRICK RAYBURN manned the show.
Rita hit Texas during the TVMA show.

PENN Dean Kelly Farewell Dinner

JESSICA and I attended to pay our respects to ALAN KELLY who skillfully and with popularity guided PENN through many years. We wish him luck in post dean life.

Fatty Acids Usage Clarified

Fatty acids usage needs to be clarified. Current thinking has omega 3 fatty acids being recommended for inflammation of any tissue. The dose of 180 mg EPA/120 DHA per 10 pounds of pet is still the current recommendation. Of course, we are quite fortunate to have EICOSADERM, which is the only ethical veterinary product to offer precisely that dose. Clients do have the option to go to the pharmacy to purchase a generic fish oil cap, although giving 1 cap for every 10 pounds can lead to a memorable experience when dosing an uncooperative, perhaps, fractious pet. And, the dose is DAILY.

Our flagship product, MalAcetic Otic, is now available in a convenient to use, economical 8 ounce size. Please look at our OTOLOGY ad on our web site
We had a vet call to tell us about using TrizEDTA for calcifying keratitis. It is suggested to add an appropriate antibiotic such as gentocin and gas sterilize. The TrizEDTA will chelate the minerals as well as synergize the antibiotic. I first heard of this from KIRK GELATT.
