Announcing EQUINE Shampoos
DermaPet will NEVER send an attachment. Although we are relatively
sure we are not infected right now, realistic experience tells us to err on
the side of caution, so do not open an email from dermapet@aol.com
if there is an attachment.

Announcing EQUINE Shampoos
DermaPet is pleased to announce our first products specifically designed for
the EQUINE market.
MALACETIC EQ Shampoo is a medicated shampoo useful as a degreaser and in assisting
treatment of most microbial infections including Dermatophilus, scratches and
ringworm using our patented 2% acetic and 2% boric acids. Available only from
veterinarians in a convenient to use 16 oz size.
DERMALLAY EQ uses our cosmetic grade, solubilized oatmeal which is useful as
a general cleanser and for it's anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic properties.
Available only from veterinarians in a convenient to use 16 oz size.
Evaluating a Boric and Acetic Acid Shampoo
GENE NESBITT, VETERINARY MEDICINE, 10-05, p 726
...conducted an 8 week trial involving 72 dogs with either seasonal or non-seasonal
pruritus. As part of the study, we assessed the effects of an antifungal and
antibacterial shampoo (as well as fatty acid supplementation and antibiotic
and antihistamine administration) in controlling pruritus in dogs. To control
secondary factors contributing to pruritus, all the dogs were bathed weekly
with a commercial shampoo containing 2% acetic acid and 2% boric acid in a soapless
vehicle with moisturizers (MALACETIC Shampoo, DERMAPET). The shampoo contained
no anti-inflammatory agents. We concluded that weekly bathing reduced the Malassezia
species, cocci and aeroallergens on the skin's surface and that this reduction
may have contributed to significant overall improvement in the dog's skin parameter
scores.

Dean's Farewell
Penn, New Bolton Center, Kennett Square
JESSICA and YT attended ALAN KELLY'S farewell party. It seems like only yesterday
when I welcomed him to PENN over a beer or 2 at SMOKEY JOE'S.
I met with classmates MIDGE LEITCH (who I teased tactlessly throughout my vet
school tenure) and NANCY BROWN, with her significant other, BILL KAY, former
AMC guru. The actual class year will be omitted to respect those that have aged
well.
We sat next to WILLIAM J. HARDY, eminent microbiologist who enlightened me
on Bartonella and INFLUENZA, a subject in last month's newsletter. He said Bartonella
was present in over 50% of cats with gingival disease, the cause of Cat Scratch
Fever (a much easier name than the last couple we had to memorize!) and a significant
contributor in feline dermatitis. We became distracted as I wondered about the
association to antibiotic responsive EGC cases.
RENO, Wild West
JACK WHITE, KIM CAREY and YT attended this annual show in Reno. Kim has
made great strides growing the west coast business. BILL TOPLIFF of MedRx joined
us for dinner at the Hilton. While waiting for the show to open and our room
to clear, the craps table was where the action was. DAN ROSSLER rolled 5 4's
bringing new meaning to fourplay; fortunately for me, an "inside player"
(for those who understand craps), he also rolled 4 9's and some 6's and 8's.
And there was leaning going on, too, where old pals ROD ROSYCHUK presented derm
and PETER EMILY (who helped design the DenTees) did dental.
Taj Mahal, ATLANTIC CITY, Atlantic Coast Conference
For those who enjoy gambling around a trade show, like TNAVC coordinator DONNA
GINDY, then October is the month. LOU GOTTHELF slipped in Monday and out Tuesday
to do his otology lecture. GARY LANDSBERG did behavior. JACK WHITE, AL LINGUA,
CHUCK MICHAELS and YT 'worked' this show. Program coordinator, RON WHITFORD,
had top speakers from all over presenting. AVMF'S ROBERT GORDON and SALLY HADDOCK
got their exercise in on the dance floor during the two parties that were hosted
by excellent bands. One of my former students, CURT ARNOLD, from my days as
a derm resident in Illinois, meandered by.
Efficacy and Stability of TrizEDTA Reclarified
The efficacy and stability of TrizEDTA needs to be reclarified. In the study by LOU GOTTHELF and GBADAMOSI (see text below) that was presented at an ACVD/AAVD meeting, Aqueous TrizEDTA needed to be diluted 8x to allow PSEUDOMONAS, previously cultured as resistant to fluoroquinolones, to just grow. Keep in mind that there may be misinformation generated, possibly from a competitor with a potentially ototoxic product containing detergents, alcohol and no USP ingredients. Original work on tris-edta by Wooley et al was using an aqueous product, without further preservative, which has remarkable stability; TrizEDTA has 3 year label dating.
Evaluation of the IN VITRO Effect of TrizEDTA on the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Enrofloxacin Against Ciprofloxacin Resistant PSEUDOMONAS Aeruginosa. GOTTHELF L and Gbadamosi S (AAVD presentation)
This study examined the in vitro effect of TrizEDTA on the minimum inhibitory
concentration (MIC) of enrofloxacin (ENRO) against 12 strains of ciprofloxacin-resistant
Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bacterial strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin
(MIC>2 µg/ml, and 5 µg/ml disks). Minimally passaged cultures
of the bacterial strains were grown on nutrient agar, and suspended in 50 mM
tris hydrochloride solution at a concentration equivalent to 0.5 McFarland turbidity
standard, optical density(OD) range of 0.08 to 0.10 according to the National
Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS) recommendation. To determine
the endpoint MIC, the bacterial suspensions were incubated at 37º C for
30 minutes, and were then transferred into wells of microtiter plates containing
two-fold dilutions of ENRO in Mueller-Hinton broth. Following overnight incubation
at 37º C, wells were examined to determine the endpoint MIC of ENRO against
each bacterial strain. Bacterial cultures were
resistant to ENRO at endpoint MICs ranging from 227 µg/ml to 7.09 µg/ml
The same protocol was repeated after TrizEDTA exposure for 5 minutes at 37º
C. Susceptibility to ENRO MIC decreased to lower than 1.7 µg/ml for all
strains. These observations were further evaluated using 10X bacterial concentrations
with similar results. These findings suggest that TrizEDTA exhibits a sparing
in vitro effect on the MIC of enrofloxacin against ciprofloxacin resistant Pseudomonas
aeruginosa and may benefit treatment of otitis externa infections with both
susceptible and resistant Pseudomonas bacteria.
And, otic products are the #1 reason pet-owners re-visit the vet clinic and/or
visit for an OTC product (Vet Economics).
EICOSACAPS will be the new name for the OFA Caps Plus EZ-C and garlic. This
is our omega 3/6 version very similar to DermCaps except we also have the antioxidants
(Vitamins E and C) plus zinc and garlic.
We are proud to announce KlearWax, a potent cerumenolytic, degreasing, dewaxing product containing Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate (DSS) and Urea Peroxide. DSS emulsifies wax and debris. Urea Peroxide is a foaming agent to break up larger clumps of debris. This product is recommended for in house cleansing to clear away debris enabling better visualization of the otic canal and TM. It is available in a 4 ounce size in an applicator bottle.
KlearWax is DermaPet's 5th OTOLOGICAL product. They are (1) MalAcetic Otic, (2) MalAcetic Wet Wipes, (3)MalAcetic HC, (4) TrizEDTA and (5)KlearWax. Many people do not realize that DermaPet has global distribution and is now recognized as the market leader in Otology. Plus we have more coming.
Except for the Muller meeting in Hawaii, there are none. Next is the Colonial Meeting in WILLIAMSBURG, December 1-4
MedRx is offering CE
with EAR Seminars by LOU GOTTHELF. They will be in be in ALBANY (11-6), HOUSTON
(11-13) and BIRMINGHAM (12-18).
