MalAcetic HC Wet Wipes/Otology Conference

LOU GOTTHELF presented two 45 minute seminars on MALASSEZIA OTITIS and OTITIS MEDIA with the key information he usually presents in 4 hours in his nomadic Medrx seminars He summarized one of the most difficult points which is when to actually make the diagnosis, correlating clinical observations with cytology results. For example, if ulceration of ears then treat as G-. but usually let cytology as opposed to a C&S lead the treatment plan. If chronic or recurrent within a short interval then consider treating as OM. He used good common sense explaining when to use certain products in certain situations. For example, he pointed out that using an alcoholic or detergent ear product in an ulcerated ear would cause pain and further inflammation. Further, for in clinic cleansing, Dr. Gotthelf prefers a low viscosity DSS product, like KlearWax, for waxy ears because it seems to get into the horizontal canal better than the higher viscosity cerumenolytics. He showed some excellent videos demonstrating otic pathology, demonstrating when and how to flush (he loves the Medrx Earigator) and talked about what to use.

SUE PATERSON then made her presentation about Pseudomonas Treatment, also showing some excellent video. Some points she made were that most C&S's do not consider topical MIC concentration much less the effect TrizEDTA has on the target organism and potentiating antibiotics; when and how to flush and what to use; Paterson likes MalAcetic over Malaseb as a shampoo since the former suds and cleans better (she mentioned that MalAcetic was strong enough to treat yet gentle enough to use just for hygiene). Contact time is important for cleansers like MalAcetic and TrizEDTA; that baytril has 14% susceptibility against Pseudomonas vs marbofloxin with 85%+ (marbofloxin injectable is not available in the US) It is important to use ample volume (.5 ml-2 ml/ear or using a gemish that overflows the ear) and to maintain treatment for long enough ( ed note: at least 60 days) and use BID.

ED Note: Use a gemish adding to a bottle of 4 ounce TrizEDTA, 12 ml of 100 mg/ml fluorquinolone (Baytril LA or marbofloxin) or aminoglycosides (be careful due to ototoxicity). Corticosteroids are used systemically as opposed to topically. The importance of systemic antibiotics, if used at all, is severely diminished.

Other points made in the conference and Q&A were:

Yada, Yada

JAY MAIDEN, JACK WHITE, AL LINGUA and occasionally even JESSICA MELMAN joined YT at the booth, which was quite busy.

TNAVC was a winner of a show again. Despite being saddled with dates too close to the New Year (which will improve next year, Jan 13-17). The crowd was enthusiastic, abundant and received excellent value for CE and exhibits.

Hospitality was the key difference between this show and any other of it's size. Lunch tickets were provided for booth workers and attendees. An exhibitor hospitality room was always stocked with coffee and delicious cookies. The exhibitor/speakers reception on Tuesday nite fed us all roast beef, pasta, cheese, dessert and more than ample free booze. DONNA GINTY and her side kick/assistant SHANNON CLYATT seemed tireless. The buses moved people quickly and entertained the masses with TV monitors playing Paw and Order where a vet prosecuted diseases and a gavel like sound similar to the TV show went off when a point was made. The vet industry's very own band, Projectile, again opened, this time for REO Speedwagon.

DAVID SENIOR, it turns out, was the point person for Katrina relief for the LSU vet school shelter. Still, he had time to handle his responsibilities for the TNAVC, with apparent attention to detail despite having an unnecessary abundance of attention sent his way by YT. For those of you who still want to help out, please consider sending support to the LSU vet school where funds are needed due to Katrina.
University of Minnesota dentist GARY GOLDSTEIN visited and traded stories about MIKE MARK (Houston). GARY LANDSBERG visited form the frozen tundra of Canada where partner STEVE WAISGLASS held down the fort. ANGIE ROMANI, ClipperVac, was working hard at his booth (this should please wife MARLENE, back at the PA grooming school).

Ever wonder where the "In heat" or "Will bite" labels come from? DAVE HOWARD and his two sisters, DARLA RAE and DONNA MARKIA, together run Para Medical Labels. Dave and I have a common acquaintance to which we thought of dedicating a veterinary version of the Darwin awards. If anyone has any good stories please forward them to me. In the TV realm, Dr KAROON Chaiwongroj of Thailand wants to know if anyone has any videos of pet bloopers for his TV show. Please send them to dermapet@aol.com with knowledge they may be used again.

PATRICK RAYBURN visited the Missouri VMA in Branson where 600 vets registered and competed for a $10,000 cash raffle.

AVMA GHLIT. Anyone besides me have trouble getting his or her insurance card(s) for getting prescriptions filled? The bill surely arrived on time.

We have been quite fortunate and busy this year, and are quite thankful for it. We have placed several new products on the market including MalAcetic HC (and now MalAcetic HC Wipes), KlearWax, 2 new Equine products, TrizEDTA Plus and MalAcetic Otic AP. We have several more in line, but, as a small company have to maintain focus on our core strength which is otology and dermatology.

New Products For Immediate Release

MalAcetic HC WET WIPES. MalAcetic HC is now in a convenient to use large Wet Wipe which will be introduced at the WVC in Las Vegas. This utilizes our patent protected MalAcetic line of acetic and boric acid products which have both cleansing and antimicrobial effects and merges them with the anti-inflammatory effects of hydrocortisone.

TrizEDTA Plus (our patented, USP containing tris-EDTA product with .15% Chlorhexidine gluconate) and MalAcetic Otic AP (our patented MalAcetic Otic with an apple fragrance) were introduced to the market at TNAVC in Orlando.

TrizEDTA potentiates chlorhexidine exponentially creating a powerful antimicrobial that when antibiotics are added should be the deciding factor, particularly in gram negative infections in the skin, respiratory and urogenital systems.

MalAcetic Otic, our patented franchise product, is currently the treatment of choice by many experts for Malassezia otitis. It is not ototoxic. While most people love the pleasant peach fragrance, there are some who do not. For those who would like an alternative to the peach, we have placed this apple fragranced product on the market.
