Bacterial Otitis Protocol/ Service Award
DermaPet will NEVER send an attachment. Although we are relatively
sure we are not infected right now, realistic experience tells us to err on
the side of caution, so do not open an email from dermapet@aol.com

Bacterial Otitis Protocol/ Service Award
Protocol for Bacterial Otitis The following Treatment Plan is a modification
of one in the DermaPet folder on VIN or at www.dermapet.com.
1. If there is skin infection or while using high dose corticosteroids, use
Marbofloxin or Baytril systemically for about 21 days. This is a substantial
reduction in previous thinking since most experts now believe systemic antibiotics
do not reach high enough levels in the middle ear
2. Add a TrizEDTA gemish to fill up the ear canals twice daily. To make a TrizEDTA gemish add 6-12 ml (recent thinking is to make a 10 mg/ml solution) of 100 mg/ml antibiotics (Marbofloxin, Baytril LA, amikacin, gentamycinthe latter two are aminoglycosides which are known to be ototoxic).
3. For the first 14 days, I would use systemic prednisone at 1 mg/kg IF OM is diagnosed. The rationale is to decrease the inflammation, mucous secretion from the mucoperiosteum, pain and viscosity of the exudate in the tympanic cavity.
4. If OM is diagnosed, I would anesthetize and with visualization flush the ear with TrizEDTA and directly instill Baytril and NaDex phosphate into the tympanum. If the tympanum is present and OM is suspected then I would do a myringotomy. How to do a myringotomy has been previously discussed and is available at the web site. The location of the myringotomy should be ventral.
In Rancho Mirage, CA on April 25, DermaPet received the 2005 OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE & ORDER FULFILLMENT AWARD from the AVDA, American Veterinary Distributors Association at their annual meeting. Coming from the AVDA, the trade association who represents the distributors who ship the products used by veterinary hospitals, this is quite an honor. We may be one of the smallest companies but we try hard to deliver the best products as quickly as possible and respond to the needs of the market. This is the 2nd award of this type that we received this year. JACK WHITE, who attended the meeting, was pleasantly surprised to receive this honor. This is especially an honor for our inside staff of CHRIS VON STEIN and DAVE BROWN who work on this every day and who help DermaPet bring new meaning to the letters QSD Quality, Service and Dedication.
Have a vet meeting in Baltimore and people will come. While the meeting may still have something to prove, the restaurants (from Little Italy, to the Inner Harbor and Fells Point) in Baltimore sure are outstanding. The exhibit hall was busy on Saturday and Sunday early, at least during the breaks. There were top internationally known speakers on a diverse and comprehensive program.
GLENN TAYLOR and DREW brought some friends and were entertained lavishly by CHUCK MICHAELS. JACK WHITE, Chuck and YT joined PETER EMILY for a fine meal in Little Italy. DAN NEGOLA, JIMMY BURNS, LEW COOPER, RICHARD WEITZMAN and CANDACE ASHLEY were but a few of the vets who attended.
Palm Springs,Derm Meeting
The industry finally found Palm Springs, which celebrates excellent weather and low rates during the shoulder season of April. JACK and YT worked this show, which was mainly social for exhibitors except for two half hour breaks at 1030 and 330. First dog, ROXY, also worked this show. While the off the beaten track exhibit hall may have been quiet, most relationships were renewed at the many parties, in the lobby or just hanging around the hotel. Between Hills opening party and dinner we shared some wine (including a magnum of Insignia) with a few old friends including the Dean of Vet Dermatology, RICHARD HALLIWELL. LOU GOTTHELF and YT played not-so-notable golf on Thursday and Friday after working the morning breaks.
We ran into SHEA MARTIN (Maui) as we were arriving on Thursday nite, which was the PALM SPRINGS Street fair where PHIL ROUDEBUSH, JIMMY NOXON and ROD ROSYCHUK were seen enjoying themselves. Friday nite was an excellent outdoor party sponsored by Royal Canin at a local zoo/animal habitat called the Living Desert. I visited with THIERRY OLIVRY and wife BARB ATLEE on the tram there and talked with PETER IHRKE, KAREN CAMPBELL and CAROL FOIL. Canadians JAN HALL and STEVE WAISGLASS talked about the past and future derm programs to which I suggested Steves partner and Behavior guru, GARY LANDSBERG. CHRISTINE SWINNEN (Belgium), CLAUDIA NETT (Switzerland), KERSTIN BERGLAND (Sweden) and RALPH MUELLER (Germany) were part of a large European contingent.
Saturday nite was the farewell event sponsored by Bayer by the pool at the Wyndham where I sat with CHARLES CHEN and talked about the upcoming ASIAN VET DERMATOLOGY meeting in BEIJING. PHILLIPE MOREAU talked about the upcoming Southern European Veterinary Conference in Barcelona next year.
Pam Springs AGAIN, AVDA
JACK WHITE attended this event where almost all distributors and most pharmaceutical
companies attended. As previously noted, we received the OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER
SERVICE & ORDER FULFILLMENT AWARD. YT entertained RICH SHAVELSON (Vetoquinol),
BOB ZEIDE (PCI) and CHRIS GLASSER (FocusTechnology) for a round of golf at Toscana
CC. Methinks Rich should take a camel instead of a cart next time since he spent
so much time in the sand.
Dentees Continues To Show A Substantial Increase In Market Share
DENTEES continues to show a substantial increase in market share, of late. We suspect this, in part, may be due to all the press Greenies, who were recently bought by Mars, is receiving. In fact, JAN BELLOWS delivered us the good news that at least one other dental colleague, who is not known to endorse products, has written on the internet that he has switched his dogs to DenTees. DENTEES are a softer, gentler, more digestible version with acetic acid, HMP for the teeth and gum health, and odofactants for the breath. The term odofactant, coined by PETER EMILY, refers to the addition of grapefruit seed extract to neutralize stomach odors thus helping bad breath. DenTees were made under the careful watch of PETER EMILY and BOB WIGGS.
MALACETIC Otic AP is a gentler version of MalAcetic Otic. In those rare cases where a pet may react you can now try MalAcetic AP and/or back off from all topicals, and/or try a corticosteroid systemically first and/or dilute the MalAcetic Otic.
TrizEDTA and TrizEDTA Plus are truly Aqueous products with virtually no propylene glycol or any other surfactants or preservatives. These are stable (3 year shelf life) and effective products with decades of R&D proving their efficacy. See our discussion with WOOLEY in the April 06 newsletter.
