A Pilot Study To Investigate The Anti-Fungal Activity of A 2% Boric Acid/ 2% Acetic Acid Shampoo
DermaPet will NEVER send an attachment. Although we are relatively
sure we are not infected right now, realistic experience tells us to err on
the side of caution, so do not open an email from dermapet@aol.com
if there is an attachment.

A Pilot Study To Investigate The Anti-Fungal Activity of A 2% Boric Acid/ 2% Acetic Acid Shampoo

Samples of hair were combed from 10 Persian cats infected with a confirmed infection
with Microsporum canis on the basis of hair fluorescence and positive cultures.
None of the cats had been treated with any topical or systemic anti-fungal therapy
prior to starting the study. The hair was divided into 7 amounts, each weighing
approximately 1 g, and placed in sterile nylon stockings. Care was taken to
ensure that fluorescent hairs were present in each Group. 7 wash solutions were
prepared by investigator 2. 20 ml each of (1) water, (2 and 3) 2% chlorhexidine
/ 2% miconazole shampoo, (4,5,6,7) 2% boric acid / 2% acetic acid shampoo. Investigator
1 was blinded to the identity of the 7 samples and asked to wash each of one
the sample in one of the solutions. For samples 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 a ten minute
contact time was used. For samples 4 and 5 a five minute contact time was used.
Each sample was then rinsed in 100ml of sterile water and left to dry on sterile
swabs. Each sample was then submitted individually to a commercial laboratory
(Axiom laboratory) for fungal culture. A profuse growth of Microsporum canis
was obtained from samples 1, 2, 3 after 14 days. No fungal growth was obtained
from samples 4,5,6,7 after 3 weeks.
This in vitro study suggests that a 2% boric acid / 2% acetic acid shampoo
has good anti-fungal activity with both a 5 and 10 minute contact time.
Yada, Yada
We have just been advised that the Mandalay Bay and The Hotel in Las Vegas
have a severe room shortage for Sunday, February 18. In fact, there are no rooms
available that night due to the NBA All Star game. My advice is to book your
rooms NOW at the Four Seasons while you can get them.
Dusseldorf, Germany
RAINER KRAUSS, who operates an 11 man FULLY equipped practice (NEAL TAUBER/BOB
ANTIN, are you reading this!) hosted a day on Otology for practitioners in Dusseldorf.
When yours truly (YT) discovered Rainers practice was one of 4 or 5 in
Germany with an MRI machine and that MEIKE STEINMANN has a special interest
in otology, a otology study using MRI was encouraged. Dr Steinmann presented
a paper and YT also found time to present Malassezia and Pseudomonas in between
visiting local beer breweries and the worlds longest bar (1 mile of consecutive
bars) and a very interesting old town. TV personality JERRY KNOLL and his gal-pal
dog groomer, par excellence CLAUDIA FRANKE also entertained first dog, ROXY,
and YT. I met MAX KRAUSS, Rainers son and a vet student, who wants to
do an internship in the US.
Palm Springs AGAIN, AVDA
In case you missed it, DermaPet received the OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE &

Past GVMA Pres, LEE IZEN, gave a glowing referral on YT to new TM HARRY STEGAL.
Readers may recall YT inherited Lee as a partner upon vet school
graduation thanks to Papa YT. Like fine wine, we both seem a lot more mellow
with age, although some may disagree.
We will be in MYRTLE BEACH at Ralph Lees South East Veterinary Conference, June 15-18. Then we are off to HONOLULU for the AVMA, July 15-19.
MedRx is offering CE
with EAR Seminars by LOU GOTTHELF in MINNEAPOLIS on June 4, AUSTIN on June 11,
SHREVEPORT on June 25 and PHILADELPHIA on July 16. For more information call
888-392-1234 or visit their web site to find out when one is coming near you.
Dentees Continues To Show A Substantial Increase In Market Share
DENTEES continues to show a substantial increase in market share, of late.
We suspect this, in part, may be due to all the press Greenies, who were recently
bought by Mars, is receiving. DENTEES are a softer, gentler, more digestible
version with acetic acid, HMP for the teeth and gum health, and odofactants
for the breath. The term odofactant was coined by PETER EMILY.
MALACETIC Otic AP is a gentler version of MalAcetic Otic. In those rare cases
where a pet may react you can now try MalAcetic AP and/or back off from all
topicals, and/or try a corticosteroid systemically first and/or dilute the MalAcetic
Otic.
TrizEDTA and TrizEDTA Plus are truly Aqueous products with virtually no propylene
glycol or any other surfactants or preservatives. These are stable (3 year shelf
life) and effective products with decades of R&D proving their efficacy.
