The Asian Trip
It took me two weeks to be able to return to writing mode from the jet lag.
It was an amazing adventure. To YT, already in a massive expansion, it appears
that China is going to dominate world trade and capitalism in the 21st Century.
KOREA
Korea was, perhaps, the cleanest country I'd ever visited; it was so clean they
had people sweep the parking lots. There are way too many cars and they all
seemed to be driving on the same streets at once. While I saw few dogs, those
I did were often carried in the pet-owners arms. Tourists were not often seen
other than in Itaewan where there is a US base and Gecco's, a popular food and
beverage establishment, where many ex-pats congregate.
I met with numerous vets, notably, Dr KANG from KAHA, who enlisted DermaPet's
support by presenting a good case to send WSAVA in 2011 to SEOUL. I also met
the SANG RAE-HANG, YOU SUK-JONG and OH SEUNG-SUN of SVMA at their offices. Both
were very concerned over the presence of Internet sales of veterinary products
to consumers for bargain prices. A strategy to prevent this was implemented.
CHINA
The mass of civilization as it is attempting to meet the needs of the 21st century
is overwhelming.
SHANGHAI
I started in Shanghai where the language and culture barrier quickly shocked
this veteran traveller. My first moments were to send some mail, get some laundry
done, find a cell phone and long distance calling card. With the help of the
concierge at the Portman Hotel, who actually walked with me, I found the PO
and laundry in the same 10 by 10 space adjacent to the hotel. Without her, there
is NO WAY either mission would have been completed. The cell phone was another
story. Despite a sign saying they accepted Visa and Mastercard, after selecting
a surprisingly very expensive and basic phone, with no English, they refused
my card. I found out they only accepted Chinese issued credit cards here and
at most establishments. The lesson being, when going to China brings lots of
cash and/or an ATM card. As far as how little English was spoken, even the instructions
on the cell phone when you hit the prompts correctly did not speak proper English,
i.e., a failed call was prompted by "your call is dismissive." Taxis were cheap
and had a tape which welcomed passengers into their car in english, although
not one single taxi driver understood close to a complete thought much less
a sentence. Directions were required in Chinese characters lest you were lucky
to be dropped only close to your intended stop.
The Portman Hotel in Shanghai is the best hotel I have ever stayed at, perhaps,
anywhere in the world, when it comes to service, value and luxury. In fact,
all of China was inexpensive except for some restaurants and most name store
shopping (it surprises me that anyone goes to any of these with all the knock-offs).
While the Bund offered the beauty of the Yangtzee River, Zin Tin Dei was the
Fanueil Hall like night spot where Westerners dined and partied.
WUHAN
I was met at the airport by Dr HU PING, our distributor in China, and JOHN NORWEI,
a practically fluent in English student at the vet school who was assigned to
be my host. John had selected a cartologically challenged taxi driver who took
2 ½ hours to get me to the hotel (it took 45 minutes to get back to the airport.)
Upon arriving at the hotel, I was pleased to find derm colleague and Asian Vet
Derm Society organizer CHARLES CHEN (Taiwan) in the lobby. Before checking in
to yet another, supposedly better hotel, the CSAVA hosts had a banquet where
I was honored with numerous toasts and food that defied description. One of
my favorite local traditions is that the Chinese believe that their guests must
eat and drink well to be happy. At the banquet, Charles observed my culinary
bravery as compared to RICHARD HALLIWELL who he said "would not even eat chicken's
feet." Word of advice to visiting speakers: beware what they call "white wine'
which rivals tequila in alcohol content and 'kick'. They poured me a large glass
of this which I quickly switched to beer for all toasts except the last with
the head of the delegation who said I must" bottoms up" with my wine glass of
"wine" vs. his shot glass. I said "OK", but first asked a question during which
I switched glasses and smiled saying, "Bottoms-up" while the room roared with
laughter. We settled on a more equal split, drank the toast and staggered out,
red-faced.
English was rarely understood here, and then, only conceptually. For example,
there was a party in the room next to me replete with lots of noise. My attempts
to diminish this noise failed so I tried dialling the front desk who found the
best person who could speak English and they could only determine that "you
are maddened" before sending someone up to knock on my door.
My lecture went well. Surprisingly, my distributor compatibly (like DermaPet
in the US) handles the Medrx video-otoscope trading under the name of SOPRO.
In a moment totally out of context for WUHAN, JOHN CARVER who practices in PLANO,
TEXAS, appeared.
BEIJING
DEGUI LIN, the Director of the BEIJING VET SCHOOL, and JASON SHI, the Associate
Head of the Clinic hosted me. Dr LIN showed me around the school and fed me
a memorable, banquet style lunch. Dr SHI ably translated my BEIJING VMA lecture
and took me to the original PEKING Duck restaurant where we ate an entire duck
that was certainly bigger than my Roxy, (a Yorkie). When I say the entire duck,
picture everything but the feathers including the skull/beak, gizzard, liver,
heart, skin and so-on. They also arranged a personal, hosted guided tour of
the famous BEIJING ZOO from the zoo's chief veterinarian, CHENGLIN ZHANG, where
YT got up close to numerous Pandas. Despite an edict which limited the size
of dogs to 14 inches high and the number of dogs to one per household starting
two business days after my visit, there was no indication that the Beijing Vet
School knew anything about it.
BEIJING is to shoppers what LAS VEGAS is to gamblers. It is the world's mecca
of bargains and selection. The Silk Market offered every label of clothes, jewelry,
household (kitchen, bedroom, carpet) and sporting (golf, baseball, football,
soccer and tennis) items. Bargaining was the rule and no more than 1/3 the original
ask in China was the most paid. This was often no more than 10% of the US cost.
The most common lament of travellers is that they ran out of cash and had to
go back to the hotel or a machine to get more. I bought 2 large suitcases on
wheels (swiss army) for $20 each just to carry back my loot and wish I bought
more.
Then, of course, there was the vast and ancient CULTURE. The enormous history
filled TIANENMEN SQUARE, the emperor's home called the FORBIDDEN PALACE, the
exhausting, aerobic GREAT WALL and the Emperor's Tombs were but a few of the
notable sights.
CHINESE PROTOCOL (As if I would know) and other observations
The air in China was so dirty it made the average US industrial city appear
as if it were in an oxygen tent. Hand a person your business card with both
hands as opposed to your left (to them, your dirty) hand. Actually read the
card and comment on it. Do not write on it… as I did. When asked after writing
on it, I explained, that I wanted to make a note of the situation to properly
respect them. BIG mistake.
Do not place your chopsticks in the rice. Even I didn't do this.
When shopping in a small aisled store, an older, smallish woman muttered something
guttural to me then walked through me with a force that, if she were my size
would have knocked me down, saying something that if I could recall it would
mean "Get the h…out of the way." The observation made by many at Chinese restaurants
that the waiter hears you but keeps walking may be valid for all Chinese who
are trained to do their job and not others. Also, if you do not ask exactly
for what you want, you will likely get literally what you ask. Airplane food
was better than most food you could get in a US restaurant including variety
(hot choices of beef or chicken, rice or noodles) with delicious, fruit, vegetable,
salad, nut and candies, all hermetically sealed.
Police presence and crime. There was no crime that I noticed in my limited experience,
despite being warned to be careful. Police were everywhere, vocal and serious
yet not intrusive, especially to tourists. I did see bicycles frequently checked
for licenses. The concept of a Chinese fire drill came to mind when seeing the
vast numbers of people going in every direction even in the absence of any alarm.
Everything was negotiable.
If there is anything that is or was not understandable using the powers of
logic, rational thought and observation then it is described as "that's how
it's done in China." Traffic signals for the most part are merely indications
of what is advisable. They do not say the word "no" but prefer "that would be
inconvenient."

DermaBenSs Compendium Listing "Mistake"
We discovered a "mistake" in our Compendium listing for DermaBenSs which contains 2.5% BENZOYL PEROXIDE, 1% SULFUR and 1% Salicylic acids. It is the only benzoyl peroxide product containing both sulfur and salicylic acids on the market. Demand for this product has been increasing since a similar product without salicylic acid went on backorder. For the correct listing go to http://pro.naccvp.com/view.php?prodnum=1459002&u=country&p=msds.
MalAcetic HC Wipes Useful For Treating Skin Fold Problems
MalAcetic HC Wipes are particularly useful to treat skin fold problems, especially in inflamed areas. The most common of these include breed predispositions such as bulldogs, most spaniels, Bassett's, Shar pei as well as vulvar, facial, eye, chin, lip and tail folds. Cats with eosinophilic granuloma complex, particularly the eosinophilic ulcer and dogs with "hot spots" aka 'pyotraumatic dermatitis' do well on these since they have both antimicrobial as well as anti-inflammatory effects.
TrizEDTA Plus Enjoying Growing Support
Reports are in that TrizEDTA Plus is enjoying growing support as a flushing agent for tracheal washes as well bacterial rhinitis. Experts are adding 1000-1200 mg of aminoglycosides such as amikacin or gentocin to the 4-ounce bottle before flushing. See Antibiotic-tromethamine-EDTA lavage for the treatment of bacterial rhinitis in a dog. | Wooley RE Berman AP | Shotts EB Jr | J Am Vet Med Assoc | 1979 Oct 15 | v. 175 | (8) | p.817-8. Others are using the same mix as a bladder flush for FUS and other resistant cystitis cases.
